Genre analysis

Communication technology advancements have made it easy for anyone with access to the internet to publish their thoughts online. Creating and maintaining a blog is one of the most popular ways of posting their ideas online. A blog is a regularly modified web where date entries are recorded in reverse sequential order. Blogs have a different approach from other genres. For instance, the positivity blog post, by Henrik Edberg, titled ‘‘How to Stop Worrying: 9 Simple Habits,’’ is a list that addresses how to become more positive.

The positivity blog post mainly talks about living life in a positive way, but its mode of turning over this message differs in purpose and audience. This blog targets adults and mature readers who are in search of a better way to live their lives positively. In his site, Edberg mentions that he writes not for psychological advice, but he writes for entertainment, and to give information to readers through his posts. The post ‘How to Stop worrying” informs the blog readers how they can handle worrying thoughts. Readers reading the posts will look for ways that will work for them. Since there is a lot of examples of how to stop worrying, different readers will be able to choose solutions that will help them. Some examples are more appealing to people than others.

In positivity blog, Edberg writes in a clear, concise and casual style. Edberg uses short sentences and writes each paragraph on its own. He avoids repetition since most blog readers find it irritating. Edberg’s style numbering and writing different headings in bold makes it easy for skimming by the blog readers and finding precisely what they are searching for. For example, the bolds ”6. Work Out” and below it has some short sentences that explains it. Reader will have the idea of what they are searching for and what they are looking towards to change in the blog. The blog post information comes from the blogger’s experiences and ideas. It is up to the readers to believe what they want from the author because nothing can show the credibility of the source. However, Edberg has enough evidence to support his writings and make them credible. He writes two or three sentences under every heading in which he explains them and gives their purpose. Edberg uses fewer emotions because he approaches the subject scientifically.

Edberg’s blog post starts with two quotes and a photo of worrying. The colors of the images appear to be more dramatic when the picture is altered. The close up of a person with their hands on their face is in black and white; the sleeves of the sweater are bright yellow, making the hands more transparent than the front. Worrying in a negative light is talked about in the quotes. These quotes and photos set a topic of the blog in which Edberg is writing from. A lot of photo analysis is done. Most blog posts get introduced with a picture for the reader to quickly know what the blog post will be about without necessarily reading.

In conclusion, Edberg’s blog post’s main aim is to inform the audience than to entertain. It is a formal style of writing that is right for blog posts. The traditional method of formatting is used for blogs with photos, quotes, bolding, and short paragraphs. Genre determines the format, audience, and purpose.
