Global warming or climate change have become generally accepted terms to describe the gradual temperature increase the Earth is experiencing. Not everyone believes the phenomenon is occurring. However, the majority of the climatologist scientists around the world agree that greenhouse gases produced by man are contributing to the global warming phenomenon occurring on our planet today.
One of the greenhouse gas culprits in this global warming issue is carbon dioxide (CO2). Every day, the earth’s human population pumps CO2 into the atmosphere just by going through daily routines. China leads in CO2 emissions with the U.S. as a close second. A not-so-fun-fact is that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the average U.S. household carbon footprint is about 50 tons of CO2 per year.[unique_solution]
In Part 1, you will examine environmental security (ES) and its link to climate change, and measure your carbon footprint. Then, in Part 2, you will use calculators to measure your actual footprint and become aware of how to reduce or increase it.
Part 1: Do you agree or disagree with the majority of the climatologist scientists who say that greenhouse gases produced by man have created the phenomenon of global warming? How does this affect ES? In your response, be sure to include at least two scholarly references that provide support.
Part 2: How do you measure up? For this next part of this activity, use the links below to calculate your current carbon footprint. The EPA calculator is detailed. Be honest and enter your data; record the number. Then consider some lifestyle alterations to reduce your carbon footprint, and enter your new data changes into the EPA website calculator. Recalculate for a new measurement. Has it changed? Describe to the class what your lifestyle changes would need to be for the new number.

Next, use the calculator below. It is very simple, but it is a good demonstration for how you measure up to the U.S. and the “World Target.”
