Grendel Chapter

Chapter 9

  1. Priests display a sign of Sagittarius. Grendel listens to the nature of the gods from the priests. Grendel is obsessed with curious religious beliefs.
  2. Priests represent a system of belief (human religion). The priest’s belief that there is a god who they pray. One of the priests displays his commitment and belief to the gods when Grendel lies to him that he is the priest’s god when he is asked who he is. The priest ended up bowing down to pray to Grendel. Grendel plays with the priest’s and is amused by the priest’s reaction of crying when he is telling Grendel about the gods.
  3. In this chapter, there is an inner conflict in Grendel on whether to kill the priest or not. A conflict also appears when the priests pray to their gods to destroy Grendel. Grendel does not kill the priest because he noticed that although he had a different meaning of life, the priests believed in their gods and had a sense in the world.
  4. The main theme is human religion. The chapter celebrates religion as the life and parcel of the priests. The priests believe so much in their gods that one of them could not notice that Grendel was cheating on him. The theme of human religion is shown as a strong belief of humankind to their gods. The priest is attached to their gods to the extent of crying to them. The theme shows the relationship between humanity and their gods though Grendel viewed this as meaningless.
  5. Gardener presents Grendel as a non-religious person as compared to Beowulf, who resolves his Christian beliefs though he had unchristian behaviors. The irony is also seen between Grendel and the priests. The priest prays to their gods to destroy Grendel while Grendel is attentively waiting for someone to come and kill him.
