hamlet summary
Hamlet is considered to be one of the most famous plays in the English language. It is also the longest play to date.
Hamlet struggles with indecision while his mother and uncle scheme up against each other while simultaneously trying to poison him. The Danish prince’s revenge culminates in a series of events with no apparent ending, leaving readers with an unending question about how Shakespeare intended it to end.
The play was written by William Shakespeare and published in 1603. The title comes from a quotation from Psalms 110:4 (KJV): “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.” The play was first performed on stage at either The Globe Theatre or Blackfriars Theatre on November 6, 1600, by King James I and

Hamlet characters
Hamlet is the most famous of Shakespeare’s tragedies. It is also one of the most famous plays in history. Hamlet revolves around a young prince who must avenge his father’s death and right the wrongs of the state.
The love interest, Ophelia, is a woman who falls for Hamlet and follows him to Denmark but doesn’t know what she’s getting herself into. She becomes stuck between trying to please her father and being true to her feelings for Hamlet.
The antagonist, Claudius, is the King who killed King Hamlet. He also has a son named Laertes, who has been waiting for revenge since he was 14 years old when his father killed his mother and Hamlet’s father.
Claudius was the King of Denmark from 395 to 408. His good-heartedness moved him into spending most of his time with people who loved him as all that he did until he became paranoid about his power as an older man and as a King.
The Ghost of Hamlet’s father is killed soon after asking Claudius for revenge on Hamlet’s uncle, who murdered him. This leads to Hamlet having revenge on Claudius, who plotted the murder behind the scenes by asking Gertrude to convince her husband to do it.
The Ghost
The Ghost presides over all events in Hamlet’s life, but he is not visible to anyone except Hamlet himself. He appears as an apparition, a voice, or sometimes as a personification of death.
The Ghost has several causes for haunting Hamlet, but the leading cause is that he believes that now that Claudius has killed his father and married his mother, he can now take revenge on him by killing him too.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
The most notable thing about Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is that they do not have a purpose in life other than being friends or releasing tension through jokes which can be seen throughout the play.
Horatio
Horatio is the only witness to the murder of his father and is forced into hiding after Hamlet identifies him as a potential threat. At this point, Horatio has lost everyone he loves; he decides to take revenge on Claudius for his suffering.
Act 1
The first act of Hamlet opens with a prologue, or speech given by a character, at Elsinore Castle. The prologue introduces us to two characters – Claudius and Laertes. Claudius was just crowned King after killing his brother, King Hamlet. Claudius is now married to King Hamlet’s wife, Gertrude. Gertrude has just given birth to their son, Prince Hamlet, who has not yet seen his father’s murder of his father and mother-in-law.
Act 2
This act is all about analyzing Claudius. The audience sees him as a villain who has no soul. He has taken advantage of his position to gain power and prestige because he is not good enough to deserve it himself.
Act 3
The act 3 in Hamlet is played by Horatio, who visits with the Ghost of Hamlet’s father to tell him about how he was murdered.
Act 4
Act 4 in hamlet summary is a ruthless scene. It is a “nightmare,” a “vaulting fire,” and a “doomed enterprise.”
The scene starts with Polonius’s death, followed by the arrival of the fairies who sing to Ophelia about Hamlet. Laertes comes in and tells Ophelia that Hamlet failed to kill Claudius. The King enters, and then Gertrude, who tells Laertes to leave his sister alone. Gertrude reveals that she knew her son was not dead but became insane from grief. She tells Laertes that she did everything for him–went to Denmark, kept his mother hidden away–but he still became insane from grief. Finally, she reveals how her husband.
Act 5
Act 5 in Hamlet is the fifth act of Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.” It begins with a list of characters. One of these is Ghost, who appears to Hamlet and speaks of his father’s death. He then warns Hamlet that Claudius is not his uncle but has killed his father and that Gertrude has married the man.
It then switches to Denmark, where Claudius is speaking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern about the recent death of old King Hamlet. They are put off by how he has become so different since his father’s death, but he insists that they continue their mission to get rid of Fortinbras.
Hamlet themes
Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most famous play, and it has many themes. One of the largest of Hamlet’s themes is the struggle between two families – the family of Hamlet and the family of Claudius.
The struggle between these two families occurs in Act I, Scene 1 when Claudius kills King Hamlet. It drives the revenge plot for much of the rest of the play.
