Harassment

Harassment can either be treatment or consideration based on category or class rather than individual merit. There are different forms of harassment existing in society today. Some of them include physical harassment, personal harassment, psychological harassment, discriminatory harassment, sexual harassment, cyberbullying, and 3rd party bullying (Konold, 2015). The common aspect of all the forms of harassment lies in their nature to exert pressure on the subject, creating a feeling of inferiority. This pressure, therefore, leads to reduced productivity both in workplaces as well as in the social arena.

Harassment harms society, especially discrimination and isolation. Discriminated individuals and groups tend to be denied access to rights and privileges, which should be essential to all human beings. According to Konold (2015), discrimination and diversity are related through a tendency whereby humans decide to associate themselves with people, events, or processes that are easier for them to connect. For instance, a new student in a foreign land would naturally feel attracted to associate with other international students because they have the feeling that they both have something in common, thus making it easy for them to associate. However, harassment has brought a significant impact on modern society. People from various places and cultures have been labeled with a particular behavior or trait and thus making them prone to discrimination.

History refers to the study of past events, and primary sources are used to define history, which means that historians use first-hand accounts of information to come up with facts. Some of these accounts include fighting and farming tools, writing and drawings inscribed on stones by aboriginal communities as well as buildings. Discrimination is a vice that dates way back in history during the 20th century (Henning, 2017). During this period, scientists came up with a concept where they mainly focused on the issue of discrimination via the lenses of race dynamics. During that period, the point of race superiority was accepted in the society whereby the people of color were suppressed in culture and made to feel that they were inferior to the rest.

The issue of racism, which has its roots in the 20th century, later became a significant issue of concern. During that period, many vices came up in society, including slavery, colonialism, and unfair treatment, among others. Even though the fasteners were later subdued and normalcy was restored through the establishment of strict rules which completely abolished slavery and colonialism, its effects are still present in the current society (Henning, 2017). For instance, it is still possible for a person to be subjected to unfair treatment because of their race or tribe. This could happen in two significant ways where a senior person in an organization may decide to overwork their subject because of their skin color. In another situation, a person working in an organization dominated by a certain race could be subject to discrimination or selfish treatment by way of being rude.

Humanities, on the other hand, are the different study cultures around the world. It provides us an opportunity to compare and contrast these cultures. It has served a significant role in improving people’s understanding and broadening their perspectives as a result of experience (McGinley, 2016). The blending of different cultures and values has helped to enhance human creativity and expression through dance, literature, photography, fine art, and philosophy. These values have broadened social perspectives about various matters as well as helping people explore and enjoy the human experience fully. Humanities, as a form of lens analysis, have created a positive impact on the issue of discrimination. As a result of the interaction, people have learned, understood, and appreciated practices from diverse parts of the world (McGinley, 2016). The result is that it has helped to create peace and harmony among people relating closely both at work and in social places.

Natural and applied sciences consist of the study of our physical world and include disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, and STEM-related fields such as mathematics and technology. Natural scientists adopt a strategy where they come up with questions which they use to observe, describe, and predict natural occurrences (Rose, 2015). This knowledge of our physical world is essential for scientists so that they can quantify, compute, and document various elements of the physical world. Nevertheless, experience in these areas has created significant differences among scholars. The resulting disparities exist among the genders. For instance, various courses are perceived to be best suitable for a specific gender, while it is understood that the opposite gender would not perform as per the requirements.

Harassment in the field of natural and applied sciences often manifests itself in several ways, including discrimination in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and sexual harassment in other workplaces. Complexities involved in STEM courses make them best suitable for men (Rose, 2015). For instance, in the fields of engineering and science, where a lot of physicalities may be involved, women tend to perform lower when compared to their male counterparts. In the areas of mathematics and technology, the count of female workers or students tends to be smaller than that of men. Therefore they may be victims of sexual harassment in the form of unwarranted touching or sexual advances.

On the other hand, social science refers to the study of how different people relate to society. The social sciences lensed converge with the humanities lens, which refers to the study of different cultures. The study of society, human relationships, and culture serve to make us understand how people and consequently improving our lives. Researchers and social scientists use both secondary and primary sources to derive their conclusions. The issue of harassment in social sciences arises from the study of ancient social settings of various communities. For instance, there were no laws to prohibit women from being assaulted by their male counterparts. Hence, some individuals lack a self-drive to respect women and treat them as equal persons in modern society.

In summation, integrating the four lenses helps people understand how problems impact on others in the professional and personal context by bringing a wide array of knowledge to the limelight while trying at the same time trying to create an understanding of one another in the society. Cultural practices have been shaped by diversity in modern culture through the creation of awareness, which brought about civilization. For instance, constitutions dictate that assaulting your fellow human is illegal regardless of the relationship between the two people and thus creating a more peaceful society. Addressing issues in diversity is another important aspect since it saves a lot of time and resources. For example, while stipulating the rules for an organization, all factors should be considered and evaluated to make sure that they cater for the rights of every individual regardless of their origin. Analyzing diversity can help people interact better even when they have different points of view because it creates an understanding that people have different beliefs that have been shaped by their places of origin.
