HISTORICAL PLACES AT BORNHOLM

Being a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe bordering the Baltic and the North Sea, Denmark is well known for its famous historical places. Bornholm has been a Danish island in the Baltic Sea around 105 miles (169 km) southeast of Copenhagen and then approximately 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Sweden, was turned over to Denmark in 1660.

1.Hammershus Castle, Bornholm

Hammershus is situated over 74 meters above sea level on Hammeren. The Hammeren is the northern tip of the Danish island of Bornholm that is near to the Baltic Sea and also Scandinavia’s most significant medieval fortification. Raised in the 13th century, it was long believed that the castle was built as a private residence for the archbishop of Lund. The oldest part of the fortress that was probably built in the early 12th century to strengthen control of the island through the Archbishop of Lund.

South of the castle is a distant valley, water-filled hollows, and dense forest. Two natural spring ponds provide fresh drinking water on the side of the castle. Hammershus Fortress features a 750-meter-long (2,460 ft) perimeter wall and also a grand tower that is called the “mantel” tower. The total area that is covered by the fortifications is around 130,000 square meters.

2.Hammeren Lighthouse, Bornholm

Hammeren Lighthouse is located on the Hammeren peninsula, which is the northwestern tip on the Danish island of Bornholm. Hammeren – or Hammeren Lighthouse – was built on Hammerknuden’s highest elevation, Ørnebjerget (the Eagle’s hill), in 1872 out of granite blocks.

Its light lights at 91 meters above sea level. Due to low flying clouds and fog, the position for the lighthouse is not ideal, so it is not in operation anymore. Nowadays, they have been using the newer Hammer Odde Lighthouse which is situated at the northernmost point of Bornholm, 156 km away.

  1. Østerlars Church, Bornholm Østerlars Church (Østerlars Kirke) is a historic structure located just north of the village of Østerlars, 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) south of Gudhjem on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. It is the largest and, probably, the oldest of the island’s four round churches. This has been built around 1160, and also it consists of an apse, a large round center, an oval chancel, and has three storeys. There is evidence the church was once reinforced, the top storey serving as an open shooting gallery. The church is devoted to St Lawrence (Latin: Laurentius, Danish: Lars).

Formerly there were small Romanesque windows, but these were enlarged after the Reformation. During the 16th century, many buttresses were added to support the outer wall. The conical roof was substituted in the 17th century. The piazza is from 1870.

There are certain other Historic Places at Bornholm, too, such as Hasle, Slotslyngen, and Gudgjem, and the architecture of each one of them is equally amazing. Historic places also have a panoramic view, which is worth looking at. It genuinely brings imaginations to fire.
