History of Labor and Work
Conflicts between employers and employees are frequent in the labor sector. However, Labor laws are essential in the labor sector. This is because it ensures that both parties are not oppressed, the employer, and the employee. As opposed to the situation nowadays, companies suppressed their employees due to monopoly and lack of laws. This paper will discuss how workers tried to resist the unjust demands from their employers and how the current world solves that situation.
Many workers who were not employed by the Railroad company supported the striking workers because they wanted them to resist unjust demands from their employer (Brecher, 2014). The Railroad company practiced monopoly since it was the only company that dealt with the rail transport system. The company cut the wages of engineers and other workers. This was unjustly, and other workers offered them support to force the company to stop the injustice. In their support, the people from Indianapolis repair shops refused to repair the company’s damaged engines. They aimed to support the striking workers to force the company to listen to their demands.
The mayor and other members of the city council offered their support to the striking engineers and rebuked the Railroad company. The mayor joined the locals in sympathizing with the striking engineers. They also encourage the workers to continue pushing the company and break their monopoly, which has caused them the oppression. The local press also favored the striking workers. In their writing, they termed the Railroad company as an oligarchy. This meant that the company was having dictatorship control over its workers, which was a lousy picture of the company since they should be democratic. Efforts from workers who were not employed by the Railroad company were to make the company listen to their demands.
The United States of America today do not experience fundamental class conflicts as it was in 1877. This is because the US now has a labor-management conflict body. The labor-management conflict has a function to solve a problem between an employer and a group of employees. The organization also acts on behalf of the workers in cases they have a demand for the company. This will help the workers have their rights without engaging in any form of strikes.
The United States of America has no fundamental class conflicts today since they have labor laws. The department of labor administers labor laws in the country. The Fair Labor Standards Acts shows the rules of the minimum wage, overtime pay to be followed by both private and government employers. This guides the employers and the employees about what they should pay and be paid for their work done. The labor laws help the US to avoid fundamental class conflicts since they know the rule to follow. In case of any violation of the labor laws, one has the right to go to court to seek justice. In court, justice is served to whoever is right between the employer and employees. The court will consider the requirement of labor laws and make the right ruling according to the law. This helps the country now to avoid conflicts between employers and employees nowadays.
