History of Old Trafford through its course

As a student pursuing a career in sports, it is essential to know the history of different stadiums and arenas for holding events. The paper will thus analyze the history of Old Trafford through its course.

Following the wretched condition of the pitch characterized by gravels, marsh, and cloud fumes from the nearby factories, the club’s chairman John Henry, at that time called Newton Health, donated funds in 1909 for the construction of the stadium. The stadium was built by the Scottish architect Archibald Leitch and was officially opened in the 19th February 1910 (Parkinson-Bailey, 2000). The original capacity of the stadium was approximately 80 000. During the Second World War, Old Trafford was used by the military as a depot and in the event was bombed by the German on 11th March 1941. After a series of expansions until the 1980s, the capacity of the stadium reduced to 56 385 attendance. In 1992, the audience reduced to 44 000 due to the conversion of the stadium to all seaters. Until early 2000s addition of tiers to the north, south, east, and west stand lead to an increase in the capacity and the stadium currently holds 74 879 attendance.

Manchester United is a great club with a history of winning several cups and producing great legends. Moreover, old Trafford is ranked the second-largest stadium in the UK after Wembley hence leading me to choose the facility to study.
