Anord, C. S. (1900). Four Girls in Europe: my tour of England and the Continent, October 1900 – September 1901.
Clarissa Arnold tells about her experience alongside her three friends and their two chaperones as they travelled across the Atlantic in 1900. They travelled the Europe Grand Tour, where they blend with the American as they tried to enjoy the various cultures that did not exist back at home. The author mentions travels by bus and by train as well, which tells that the women travelled during the industrialization era when machines and industries were being introduced. She talks about the hospitality received, showing that even during 1900, hotels and hospitality were still valued. During then, the Catholic Church and the Pope were still quite upheld. The author describes the church, which was then San Pietro, as the finest thing she has ever seen. The stalls were perfect and had interesting pictures and books.
Art was also the pride of Rome, even in 1900. The author describes Florence as a “fantastic profusion of treasures of art”. Florence was also constructed to present the Roman culture of magnificence and royalty. The author states that it had the most interesting and had the most amazing places in the world. The author mentions many instances where they had a problem interacting with the locals due to the language barrier. The English language had not been introduced to other countries by then. The author also mentions a letter she got from a friend, which shows that there were no telephones, and the mode of communication was through letters. During this time, the exchange of culture was at a minimum. The authors only mention of Italian food served in the restaurants.

The author of the book specifically travelled to Italy to gather content about Modern Italy. He expresses his experience as memorable. He begins by explaining his first stopover after settling in Rome; Valmontone Fashion District, where he is mesmerized by the impeccable fashion designs at his exposure. Italy is among the leading countries in fashion, one of the factors attracting tourists. Ancient historical sites in Rome till stand. The Romans uphold their culture and even renovate these historical sites to prevent them from crumbling. The author, alongside other tourists, visited Colosseum, where prisoners wrestled with fierce creatures to entertain Romans. He states that the historical sites and have been renovated to keep it in shape. He describes roman performers who act and audience pay to watch. This shows that Rome highly upholds its ancient culture such that it wants to teach the tourists. History is also conserved through crafted sculptures, which are sold in the streets. He also visited the Tevi Fountain. The Romans still believe that once you toss a coin while in the fountain, then your wish will come true. The author also mentions that he sourced his foods in McDonald’s, also sold American food. This shows that modern Italy recognizes cultural diversity. This could mean that Italy has different communities, too, and not just Italians. The Romans also uphold their religion and believe that the Pope is the representation of God. For that matter, they have built him a city, which is called Vatican City. Historical arts still exist up to date. One of the paintings he saw was the Painting of the Creation of Man, done by Michelangelo.
