Homelessness in New York

Homelessness is rampant in New York, considering the year 2017 and average of 63,495 persons were homeless and they used to spend their life wandering in town.  Only nine cities in the whole state that were more populated with homeless people than in New York town. According to the research, three- quarter of the population of people who sleeps in New York are homeless. The population increased to 82 % in the last ten years. The community includes 23,600 children who stay in the street because they don’t have a place to live. People who are homeless claims that the houses are so expensive for them to pay the rent as well as have something to eat since they don’t have a constant. Homelessness is the responsibility of the government and the city.

The government and the city can only reduce the Homelessness by building permanent houses as well as supply the people with their basic needs. They need to lay strategies which will help in making the head meet as far has reducing Homelessness in New York. According to the research every year more than ten thousand children become homeless (Dreyer, 2018) With the children who are homeless they end up performing poorly in their education as well as experience health issues and out of this they end up having delayed development. It was discovered that out of five houses, there is one homeless child. The research shows that 110,000 New York students were homeless; this is very risky since this places fate to the young generation.

Homelessness has become a permanent problem in New York, and this needs serious attention from the government since each. Every day there is increased in numbers, and this leads to improved health issues and well as the young people failing to achieve their goals according to their ambitions. Most of these homeless students are influenced by others to join bad groups that use drugs as well as other bad traits, and this ends up messing with their life.

From the research, it was observed that by the middle of the year 2017, the total number of people who were homeless were 60,700 and these individuals used to sleep outside every night since they had nowhere to shelter. A project by Mayor which was still put in place in the same year led to a decrease in the population with only 4 % which was still a small per cent as compared to the people of the homeless people since they had a plan of reducing Homelessness to 35 % by the end of 2021. What they could have done is to establish adequate investment of houses which should be built for the homeless people specifically for the people living in New York.

It was observed that the population of the homeless people increased every day, 40 % of these people were children, and half were below six years, by the end of 15,568 people slept outside as the records said. In the year 2014 December, the population of homeless children was 25,568, and by the end of 2017, the population had increased with 1,000. The single parents who were homeless were 16,000 men as well as women and with 9.5 % and the population increased with 43.2 in last year (Hall, 2019). The was a significant increase with the single homeless people living in DHS, which was 29 times the population in 2017 November and 31 January 2018.

The population of the homeless single parents has reduced a rate of 4 % in 2017 since 1500 adults were moved to supportive house units, from 2016 an average of 1775 people were placed annually in the supportive households. Despite the effort of the government historical commitment of funding 35,000 groups for supportive housing for the homeless individuals, there is still crisis since the houses are not able to counter the number of the homeless people (Routhier, 2017). Even after the city opened ten residential dwellings in 2018, the government has failed to release $ 15 million for the same budget, and this has led to disadvantaging people since they are not able to pay rent and they end up becoming homeless. In 2017 the government had to spend $ 73000 for emergency settlement of homeless people; they also donated $ 38000 to settle single adults. The state withdrew their support resource meant to cater for the homeless and the poor as from the time Governor Cuomo started practising budget, and the impact of this withdrawal remains unfelt.

From the year 2011 to 2017, there was an increase in the cost of the management of the homeless people increased by five hundred and fifty-two million dollars. There was an increase in funds for catering for the single adults to $ 327 million, and this is after the state has paid $ 26 million and the federal funding $1.8 million as well as the city funding $ 299 million and this led to the shortcoming of the city with a total of $ 257 million for the last six years. The rest of the people who are not in the settlement program continuous to live in the transportation terminals, public places and city streets.

The research shows that between the years 1996 to the year 2017 the city lost 1.1 million units of houses which were rented with a cost of $ 800 every month. The place was reduced to an area with only 17% of rental apartments and this lead to an increase in Homelessness. In the year 2017, the number increased to 860,000 households were to spend less than $ 800 paying rent and this took 30 % of what they earned, and this was a bit cheaper, but they were very few such houses existed (Routhier, 2017). There was a shortage of 510,000 affordable apartment which could help per in when rent issues are considered since the homeless people survives under low income.

In conclusion, there is rampant Homelessness in New York, and people live in city streets, transport terminals as well as public places. The government has the responsibility to make sure that the people who are homeless have got a place to call home as well as they are feed. There is a high population of students who are homeless, and this affects their studies as well as their health.  It is the responsibility of the government to place students in homes where they can be well catered for to protect them from peer pressure as well as to maintain their educational focus. The highest population of people who are homeless are children below six years, and it is proven that when five households are considered, there must be one child who is homeless.
