How did you hear about year up, and why are you applying now
Year Up is a nonprofit institution that provides persons between the ages of 18-24 who are youths with training for their preferred courses for six months, followed by an internship in Information Technology, finance-based courses, project management, customer care services, and consultants when it comes to quality. The services offered by year up are absolutely free and students are also given a college advantage as credit. Year Up has a goal of empowering the youth as it was created basing on the belief that everyone has talent, but the country has limited opportunities to explore these talents. Year up equip youth with the necessary knowledge and skills to higher their education and expose and explore job markets in the outside world. As demography changes, the population of the youth increases while the number of job opportunities remains constant. Year up tries to expand the job market as the current situation cannot be overlooked.
I personally became aware and learned about a year up existence through a former student who had just cleared her program and had achieved her dreams in her career path had a stable job (Bowen, 2015). I was very encouraged by her breakthrough and decided to take a step to my great journey to also be successful. I would like to be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a professional in my career goal, which is cybersecurity. I have faith that getting into the year up program will uplift me a big step towards achieving my career goal.
What are some of your short and long term career goals?
The knowledge offered and the internship provided will help me achieve both my short term and long term goals. My short term goal is finishing the one year course successfully, getting exposed to the job market, and starting to earn money, which is slightly higher than the minimum wage. On the other hand, my career goal is finding my way to succeeding in my career (Walter, 2018). Attaining a level where I can successfully say that I am comfortable in my career and also get a chance to study further and attain a Bachelor’s Degree in the same path of information technology system security.
What career tracks are you interested in studying at year up and why
I am interested in software development quality assurance. My career goal, however, as mentioned above, is to become a guru in cybersecurity engineering, thereby widening my knowledge and skills in the field of information technology. In five years’ time, I want to have completed my program in the year up, upgraded to a career level in cybersecurity, having a stable job with equally stable earnings and not depending on paychecks. Thereafter I would love to go back to school and get a degree.
The whole experience I expect to have will not end until I motivate other youths to also apply for the study. Year up offers a very extensive alumni section where they meet up and motivate those still undertaking their programs and those who want to join the program. I believe that with Year Up in few years to come, every young adult will be able to realize their full potential and explore their talents. It is a closing divide path that has been proven to bring together opportunities hence making them easily available.
