The article “The Politics of Common Core” discusses how politicians received the Common Core education system in 2009 by president Obama. There were mixed reactions, as some states adopted and implemented the system while others did not achieve it. The Common Core is a system indicated that the federal government would set standards on mathematics and English language subjects taught in schools. To support the system, President Obama introduced the Race to the Top funding, which was meant to help colleges that adopted college and career standards. The states which adopted Common Core got direct qualification for the support. As evidenced in the article, some states which had adopted Common Core started to push away from the program. In most instances, they argue that the standards need to be revised and rewritten. The proponents of the system claim that the system is sound because it ensures that similar rules and students guide institutions in different states would undergo the same tests. As a result, all children in the U.S would get the same education, and the issue of disparity between the poor and the rich would decline in America. On the other hand, the opposing governors have reasoned that the system is taking away the powers of the states to manage their education systems.

There is a lot of comparison between the textbook information and the article I chose. There have been political disagreements on education systems and their goals. Just like in the article, the textbook gives an example of the Texas State School Board, which refused the use of the book “Out of Many: A History of the American People” due to paragraphs talking about prostitution in Mississippi in the late nineteenth-century. Although economic growth and career development are key goals of education, the Common Core ignores the aim of equipping morals to the students. As some politicians argue, the system does not discuss on social sciences and moral lessons. The textbook discusses morality as one of the essential goals of education. The book even highlights that teaching morality, political values, and equality of opportunity was one of the goals of education from the 1880s to the 1920s.

The two readings talk on politics on the education systems in the U.S. I believe that politics play an important role in the education sector in the U.S. In most incidences, it will depend on a person’s views on an activity to define if it is right or wrong and this is what brings political differences on education reforms. I agree with DeVos that currently, America needs a moral society. This is one of the items that have been omitted by the Common Core system. Though the primary goal of the system is to prepare students for work after primary education, moral would actively build them. Currently, students in colleges and universities engage in activities such as mass shootings, drug abuse, and violence, and they can mainly be solved by focusing on morality education. The Common Core standards can help boost the economy, but I would agree with many states which agreed Common Core standards are ethical. Still, there is a need for adjustments to ensure that the rules include many other subjects. Political history is also essential as it gives students focus and ability to understand educational policies and reforms which were successful as well as building educational goals.
