How the characters Daisy and Jordan from The Great Gatsby compare and contrast
Imagine living in a big mansion, partying weekly, living a wealthy and luxurious lifestyle, and not having anything to worry about. That is the life Jordan Baker and Daisy Buchanan get to enjoy and take advantage of. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells a story of a man by the name of Jay Gatsby, who falls in love with a woman named Daisy that is already married and tries to make her fall in love with him. Jordan, who is one of Daisy’s friends, has the same luxurious life but they both have their differences. Both these characters portray these differences through the way they make choices, present themselves, and act throughout the novel. Daisy has no true understanding of herself causing her character to make some careless decisions in her life. One of those decisions is having a child, Daisy is a “mother” to her daughter Pammy, but she doesn’t show an interest in her first born daughter’s life. [unique_solution]“She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. ‘All right,’ I said, ‘I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.’ ” (Fitzgerald 17). Daisy has a child and she made it seem like she wasn’t happy it was a girl. She then goes on saying how she hopes her daughter is a “fool” a “beautiful fool”. Daisy does not show that she wants what′s best for her child and it shows how bad of a mother she is. One way Jordan differs from Daisy is that she represents one of the “new women” in the 1920’s. Jordan dresses like a boy, cynical, and is very self centered. Unlike Daisy who dresses like an elegant woman and is very feminine. “She was a slender, small breasted girl, with an erect carriage, which she accentuated by throwing her body backward at the shoulders like a young cadet. Her gray sun-strained eyes looked back at me with polite reciprocal curiosity out of a wan, charming, discontented face.” (Fitzgerald 11). Nick uses words such as “young cadet” to describe Jordan as more of a boyish figure rather than Daisy who has a face that is “lovely with bright things in it”. Jordans appearance and the way that she presents herself towards others differentiates her than the way Daisy would present herself. The way Jordan and Daisy compare are the way they share the same lifestyle. They live in nice big luxurious houses, go to amazing parties etc. “The front was broken by a line of French windows, glowing now with reflected gold and wide open to the warm windy afternoon, and Tom Buchanan in riding clothes was standing with his legs apart on the front porch.” (Fitzgerald 6). Nick uses very desсrіptive words to describe the mansion that Tom and Daisy lives in. He describes their house as a “…a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay.” (Fitzgerald 6). Daisy lives a relaxing life where she married a wealthy man, had a kid where she doesn’t take care of, and goes to fancy parties. Jordan too lives the same life as Daisy. Although she is single and her house is almost the same as Daisy’s, Jordan like Daisy goes to Gatsby’s raving parties all the time. “ that is what i i have so far, all i need is another quote in my body paragraphs and a conclusion
