In Herrmann Brain Dominance Indicators, my results fall under A quadrant. The results points that I am rational, analytical, technical, factual, and quantitative. My preferred activities are logical reasoning, evaluating information based on facts, data collection, and analysis. Under the Big Five personality tests, I fall under the conscientiousness group. I have high regard for a thorough, methodic, and organized approach to executing tasks. Consequently, I can work on complex tasks without much difficulty. My third test was in MBTI.  Based on the MBTI personality tests, I am a debater and thus a curious thinker and also keen interacting with other intellectuals. These results allow me to understand both my strengths and weak areas. They further direct my career aspirations and my interactions with other people.

  1. Personal Values

My values are things that dictate my behaviors, characteristics, decisions, and day-to-day activities. My top three values are integrity, respect, and stewardship. Respect is the appreciation of the values, norms, and opinions held by other people.  It guides my interactions and ensures that my interactions are professional. The stewardship value rises from the feeling of social responsibility and commitment to making society better. I can define it as resourcefulness or contribution to society. My third value is integrity. It is an incorporation of elements such as reliability, honesty, decency, sincerity, justice, and truthfulness. These values make my life purposeful and lead to a fruitful engagement with other people.

Question Two

Based on the above GAPS Analysis, I would like to improve on my communication skills. Advanced communication skills will make me sociable and better interact with other people. Although I am debater, I limited in social activities. I believe that this is an area that I need to improve as it will contribute to my career growth and social life. I will seek to attain skills in both verbal and non-verbal communication. More attention will be placed in public speaking. By achieving these skills, I will be a position to effectively engage large groups (Pappas et al. 2018). Reading magazines, debating, and listening to public speaking audios are some of the ways that I seek to use. I will seek guidance from an efficient public speaker. Achieving this goal will contribute to the progression of my career. My future career requires that I be in a position to interact and communicate with diverse people without triggering conflicts. My expected outcome is that I will sustain a conversation for a longer period.

 

Question Three

The smart goal is improving my emotional intelligence levels by socializing with people, professionals, and reading more books. Having a higher emotional intelligence level would translate to better academic and career performances. Moreover, a high EQ means that I will better understand my emotions/ feelings as well as those of my peers. Not only would it enhance my social competence, but it would also improve my communication skills. Emotional intelligence is essential in understanding other people’s actions, behaviors, emotions, and motives. I acknowledge that unidentified emotions may be a source of conflict and can equally complicate the decision-making process.

Question Four

  1. Joining a Professional Network

I believe that joining a professional network will increase my exposure levels. Currently, my interactions are just limited to family members and schoolmates. While I will retain these relationships, I will frequently interact with professionals in different fields. I see this as an ideal way that I can enhance my public speaking and better develop my emotional intelligence. The objective is interacting with more diverse people in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, and other variables (Pappas et al. 2018). The interactions will educate me on their values, norms, and attitudes. I will seek the services of a mentor/ professional in leadership or communication.

  1. Reading Books

Reading is one of the ways that one can expand knowledge and generate new ideas. Although I will read different books, I will place more attention on communication and public speaking books. Topics on organizational communication will equip with tips for interacting with diverse people. My target is to read two medium books in a week. Towards the end of the semester, I will have read more than ten books.  Other than scholarly books, I will read magazines and other publications on leadership and communication.

  1. Engaging in Social Activities

Taking part in social activities is a practical and easy way of improving my emotional intelligence. My society comprises of different racial and religious groups. Each group has its distinctive values and way of life. The inability to understand to relate to these values may create conflicts of interest. However, I aim to attain cultural competence as a way of improving my emotional intelligence levels. During this period, I will challenge myself by interacting with two new persons in a week.  The persons are to be from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

 

 

Question Five

I will be keen on growing morally and intellectually. The success of the growth process largely depends on my immediate environment. As such, there, I will make some changes to accommodate for the SMART goal. One of the changes is surrounding myself with supportive people, such as family members, classmates, and mentors. I will brief these people on my goal and what I expect from them. I will seek their opinions and views on my progress. Through their feedback, I can easily keep track of my progress as well as identify areas that need improving. My peers and family members will be a source of moral support. In most cases, undergoing some transition or trying to gain new skills can be challenging (Pappas et al. 2018).

Secondly, I will ensure that I have the right books and other resources required during this period. I will defend my friends and mentors to lend me these books. For materials that will prove challenging to find, I will use the internet. I will schedule my time well and include the books or resources that I am to use in each period. The schedules will also document my progress and conformity to the timeline goals. Although I am after improving my intellectual capacity, I will also engage in physical activities such as jogging. It is a way of easing the pressure and burden of learning a new skill and equally attending to my classes. During these activities, I will also be increasing the chances of interacting with new people.

Question Six

Positive Self-Talk is a way of demonstrating self-compassion that boosts one’s determination to excel. Contrary to focusing on worries or failures, positive self-talk places more emphasis on the positive things.  In the past, I have used the approach to attain a high purpose in life and deal with challenging moments. Having strong faith increases the chances of success. I will be keen on cutting off interactions with negative people during this period. There are chances that some people would ridicule my smart goal and term it as being impractical. Positive self-talk requires that I remain objective and committed to attaining the goal. Although I am keen on attaining this goal, I don’t fear to fail. I will equally not compare my progress with the skills or success of other people.

A big portion of emotional intelligence is intertwined with transferable skills such as communication and leadership. Improving communication and social skills, call for a practical approach, such as interacting with people regularly. I will attend different group meetings, social activities, and make new friends frequently. In the case of public speaking, I will use a voice recorder. After practicing, I will have friends review these recordings and offer their feedback. On the other hand, I will also immerse myself in different cultures and ways of life. The move is in line with my aim of being competent in different cultures. Contrary to imposing my values and opinions on other people, I will learn to respect their opinions or to differ, respectively.

 

Question Seven

I will use both self-rewarding and punishment to monitor my progress. Both rewards and punishments are to ensure that I remain committed to the goal. Some of the self-rewards that I will use include buying movies, books, shoes, and other personal items. For each millstone that I attain, I will seek to buy something. Alternatively, I will dedicate more time to my hobbies such as skating, listening to music, and hiking. I believe that these rewards will not derail my plans as there are not daily. The other reward that I may use is allocating more time to spend with friends or going to a movie. They will keep me committed to succeeding in each millstone.  The rewards further provide a break from the demanding milestones (Pappas et al. 2018).

However, I will also use some punishments for every millstone that I fail to attain. Some of the punishments that I will use include giving money to charity, washing dishes, talking about the failure to my friends, spending fewer hours on recreation. I will have a group of friends checks on my progress to determine whether I meet each millstone. Nonetheless, my goal is realistic, and I have equally allocated adequate resources and time. Therefore, it would be a strenuous task to follow the schedules. However, I aim to ensure that I attain this goal within the shortest time possible. Commitment and discipline may increase the chances of having more rewards and few or no self-punishments.
