Human Health mixed with Video Games[WU1]

“When it comes to video games, one fact is indisputable: They are more popular than ever.” (Warnick, 1) [WU2] With this in mind, we can see how important [WU3] video games make an impact on lives today. Form medical diagnoses to mental and physical health, there can be many ways how video games are in the health of humans today. From ADHD medical diagnoses using virtual reality experiment, to how video games affect mental health such as aggression, and how video games can affect physical health in a good way such as exercising, [WU4] video games can really make an impact on human health. [WU5]

Medical diagnostics have been advancing with new technology, but diagnosing someone using video games with ADHD can be new to a lot of people. ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which is most common in children. This disorder causes lots of symptoms, including not being able to focus[WU6] , excessive moving, and acts that occur without thought. As said in Devon Frye’s Article The Future of Focus, “Computerized devices are seeking FDA approval to make the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD-one of the most childhood mental health concerns-a digital phenomenon.” (Frye, 1). This experiment uses a virtual reality game to test the focus that children have so the examiners can see if there are any important changes related to it. The experiment is explained, “The environment has been designed to measure multiple ADHD-related symptoms at once, and the maker claims it is more realistic and engaging than monotonous two dimensional CPT’s while remaining highly controlled.” [WU7] (6) [WU8] In this case, the environments can be a classroom or library setting. Seeing how the children react to the game will make a big difference in how we look at medical diagnoses in the future. The article goes on to explain, “After the test is complete, a report outlines how the child’s self-control, focus, hyperactivity, and other impairments differ for those of a typically developing peer.” (7) Many medical advances that are used in society today, like diagnosing ADHD using virtual reality, can make a big difference in how we look at video games the same. Video games have been a hot topic when mental health is mixed in with the growing life-like graphics, one of these reasons being aggression. Aggression can come from a number of things, but video games have the biggest impact. In Aaron Warnick’s article Video Games and Health: Sorting Science from Popular Beliefs explains t[WU10] he issues society has with video games. “Many Americans continue to believe that video games cause gun violence, with the issue raised again after recent U.S. mass shootings.” (Warnick, 5). [WU11] Many of the findings are experimented with different age groups in society, as told in the article, “A recent study by University of Oxford researchers sampled over 1,000 teens and their parents and caregivers, measuring youth aggressiveness based on which games youth played and for how long.” (6) [WU12] According to the article, Harvard University also did a study with aggression behavior and video games, “Their resulting study, published in June in Perspective on Psychological Science, found that while conclusions from researchers may vary, the available data are essentially in agreement-video games may be associated with a small but potentially negligible increase in aggressive behavior.” (7) All of the studies that go along with video games and mental health can be a true factor in how human health can be affected by video games.

The rise of physical health with video games has been a positive effect on people in human health. According to the article, Video Games and Health: Sorting Science from Popular Beliefs by Aaron Warnick, “Some games require motion by users to provide more intense exercise than unstructured outdoor play, according to a 2015 study in Games for Health Journal that tracked players with accelerometers.” ([WU13] Warnick, 10) People with disabilities, feel included when they are playing with people. According to the article, “In a survey of video game players with disabilities, the group found that users said they played for fun, but also combat stress and depression and to engage in physical therapy for their hands.” (11) [WU14] Video games and physical health is a leading factor in how people feel about themselves because of the positives effect on their health.

When video games are involved in human health, there can be lots of negative and positive affects on it. The medical diagnosing of diseases and physical activity with video games are positive effects, but the negative effects are the mental health side of human health. With the human health aspect, who knows the research that can be conducted about it. With many advancements, video games can become one of two things: it can either improve or negatively affect the health of humans, which will put a bigger impact on society’s health than it is now.[WU15]
