Ideas that shape the world moral decision essay

According to Bucciarelli, et. (2008), moral reasoning can be attributed as either an intentional and conscious process or a non-intentional and unconscious process. Bucciarelli pointed out that moral reasoning involves a systematic mental process that builds up or evaluates implications, to him moral reasoning consists of “deontic propositions” like premises, which are propositions that determiners what you should do, and should not do or the decision that you make. Therefore moral choice can be defined as a conscious mental activity that involves transforming given information concerning a particular issue to arrive at a moral judgement. Ethical reasoning can be intentional, effortful and controllable and that who is reasoning is aware of the current situation happening. This essay concerns itself with a decision that was made out of moral reasoning.

In Ethical decision making, Josephson Institute of ethic, (2002) refers to ethics being the principle of behaviour that is accorded to how a moral person he/she should behave when making a decision. Its is an ethical decision to lay off workers to enhance profits as well as cutting corners in meeting quality as noted by Poznak Law Firm, (2003). Most business owners apply utilitarian approach since they focus on an action that will result in them being beneficial to a large number of people. Therefore, the business owners take action according to the moral principle, regardless of the consequences.

In most companies, the management uses the universality approach, in determining whether a particular rule should apply to all people under all conditions. This approach considers whether an individual will be willing to have someone else to apply the rule over him/her. Business applies the cost-benefit approach that balances the cost and the benefits accumulated by the business without taking a particular action. Therefore, companies hire workers and hold them at a certain wage rate because the business output doesn’t allow greater compensation. However, if a business is running at a deficit, it should cut its expenses to pay its employees fairly.

When deciding a leader, many problems arises because making a choice gives a different meaning to different people. For instance, I may base my decision to religious and spiritual beliefs while others will n#base theirs to law or their understanding. To most of the people stealing is an ethically bad while to others is ethical because of the preconceived ideas that one follows. Also, most people accord murder as unethical. Nevertheless, as a leader, it is difficult to have unique or similar expectations from people due to the differences in ethical understanding of what is right or wrong. Therefore, as a leader, you are required to make a decision that will appease the wants of all parties. Additionally, someone may decide to fulfil the needs of others or for his/her gain E.g corrupt leaders.

Although making an unethical decision is easy, one’s true character and reputation are tested when he/she confronts such a decision. Therefore, communication is a key factor when deciding due to the difference in ethical standards from different people. This is because when using virtue approach you will have to discover through thoughtful reflection on what kind of people we can become. An individual who develops virtues will be naturally disposed to behave in a manner that follows moral principles.

According to Harper Lee TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, Atticus a white man is defending a black man called Tom Robinson for rape accusation. This was immoral because of the permeating racism in Deep South during the 1930s. However, Atticus morals instruct him to guard and serve every member of the society regardless of skin complex. Upon being questioned by his father why he defended Robinson, the narrator says “you never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. the moral teaching from Atticus behaviour sound moral and with empathy not to judge.

In business, companies make a decision that often limits both internal and external complainants hidden. This prevents the spread of moral conduct not to ruin the organizations “picture” from outside. For instance, cases of harassment of an employee by a fellow employee may be despised because the case requires an investigation and may affect the counterparts job. An employee who wants to make a moral decision will get acquainted with the employees’ handbook and follow the complains as well as refraining from revealing to the co-workers about the case. The is a common moral decision of companies providing a forum for confidential complainants which can be assessed to be immoral because it denies the parties involved moral justice.

When making a moral decision one should be driven by openness and honest talk. The ethical decision as to be maintained by being honest and forthright in communication. For example, a salesperson explaining potential problems with a product is being honest. It is morally upright during the interview to ask if he/she has ever felt the desire to exaggerate claims over a product how he/she coped with the situation.

It calls for ethically and a moral decision as an employer to recruit employees who you can trust. This is not just a desire but it is absolutely a need. As an employer, you mostly require to believe that the employee in the office is morally upright and trustworthy. Although ethics in business are occasionally not straightforward and basic moral behaviour maintained in other live scenarios. Therefore, the employer has to let the employees understand what is right and wrong concerning your expectations to them concerning their behaviour and decisions. The employer can achieve a moral decision in achieving his/her needs from the employees by training them.

In conclusion, instead of focusing on the importance of ethics in a decision, a moral decision demands foresight and sensitivity to the results of choices made, Also the ability to evaluate and asses incomplete facts as well as the required skills in achieving the set goals behind the decision(Josephson Institute of Ethics, 2002). The decision-maker should be able to make a sound decision that ranks in completing moral claims and predicting the consequences that may result.
