Introduction

9/11 is a series of four attacks that were coordinated by the al-Qaeda, the Islamic terrorist group against the US. The attacks took place on September 11 of 2001, on a Tuesday morning. Following the attack, a spectrum of people has also died about respiratory disease and cancer-related to the attack. The purpose of this paper is to explore the 9/11 attack and the impact it caused society. The Islamic terrorist attack took place in Manhattan in New York City of the United States (Campen). The attack type was a mass murder by terrorists that inculcates aircraft hijacking. The attack has significantly affected the economy of the United States through the destruction of the World Trade Center. The 9/11 attack has diverse social, health, economic, cultural, and political effects on society.

Economic effects of 9/11 to society

The destruction of the World Trade Center by the Al-Qaeda had a significant impact on the economy of New York. The attack results in the removal of property worth $10 billion. The reconstruction of the World Trade Center took more than a decade until it reopened in 2014. The closure, evacuation, and the cancellation of several business centers were due to the fear of any further attack. The 9/11 attack evident deterred an array of business and reduction of the economy of the US and New York (Kung). Further, the street of liberty was affected partially, leading to its demolition in 2007. The effects were also evident in Deutsche Bank Building, which was across Liberty Street due to toxicity from the attacks. Political effects of 9/11

In less than a month after the 9/11 attack, the US troops invaded Afghanistan attempting to dismantle Al-Qaeda. The soldiers further had a critical task of removing the Taliban government, which hid the Al-Qaeda. In the year 2003, the United States troops went to Iraq to depose Saddam Hussein. At this time, the US held that Saddam was not directly linked to Al-Qaeda but was producing weapons of mass destruction (Lowell). The invading of Iraq was the basis of war against terror that was launched by President Bush. The US troop involvement in Afghanistan has currently turned to be the longest US war in history. However, the formal operations on combat by the United States came to an end in 2014; about 8,000 troops are still monitoring the Taliban insurgency. Over more than one and half a decade after the attack, President Trump in 2017 had the intention of boosting forces in the country. The pumping of troops into Afghanistan follows the deterioration of security levels posed against the US. Generally, the 9/11 attack by Al-Qaeda has a massive stunning political impact on society.

Social effects of 9/11

Great tense and hatred have grown in the past decade due to the Al-Qaeda attack. The attack results in issues of immigration and deportations from the United States. The past decade has a record of annual removal of approximately 200,000. After the attack, the rates of expulsion grew by double and thus recording the highest standard of removal. Hate crimes are other bold effects of the attack. Shortly after the 9/11 raid, harassment and hate crimes were evident against the Islamic people both in America and Asia. However, President Bush visits Washington DC’s largest mosque to urge Muslims to be treated with respect. Two dozen members of Osama bin Laden’s family got an evacuation from the country on a private charter plane. Therefore, instances of emigration and hatred against people of Islamic culture were rampant after the 9/11 attack.

Regardless of the hatred, American Muslims came forth to respond to the attack and requesting to support the families affected. The organization of Muslims that helped in the attack include the Islamic Society of North America and among others. The organization provided help to the concerned families’ food and blood donations as well as shelter. Generally, regardless of the adverse societal reaction, the American-based Muslims were willing to help.

Health effects of 9/11

The toxic debris that was applied by the terrorists affected more than 2,500 people. Other poisonous substances were apparent such as Carcinogen that results from the breaking of Twin Towers. The exposure of the toxic substances had a massive contribution to people on Ground Zero. The administrations of President Bush went ahead to order the EPA to reassure citizens on the quality of aftermath of the attack. However, the determination was impossible as EPA had to determine the air toxicity in June 2002 (Miller-Archie). The toxic substances had effects on numerous residents, students, and workers of Lower Manhattan. The aftermath of the attack again came about by the toxic dust that affected the residents of the area. About 18,000 people have developed an illness as a result of the poisonous dust due to the 9/11 attack. A study justifies that workers present during the breakdown had effects of lungs, and about 40% had no improvement. The impact on the lungs was evident in one year after the attack. Years later, legal disputes regarding the cost of illness were still ongoing. On December 22, 2010, the Congress of the US passed the Health Compensation Act of James L. Zadroga. This law saw Congress allocate $4,2 billion for the creation of the World Trade Center Health Program. Generally, a wide range of people had long-term effects after the 9/11 attack.

Cultural effects

The effects of 9/11 go beyond the geopolitical influence on societal culture. The responses to 9/11 led to a greater focus on home life and church matters. Further, patriotism is also evident post the 9/11 attack, which is visible through the flying of flags. In the radio industry, the response was the removal of some songs from their playlist and influencing the use of an attack for thematic elements. The culture of America after the attack involves high-level security and development anxiety to the future terror attack. On the country’s culture, the psychologists argue that fear is also evident in the air travel of the country. Generally, the culture of people and the country is apparent post the attack on air travel and an increase in church attendance.

Relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia

Investigations found out that out of the 19 hijackers, 15 were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt, and one from Lebanon. In the year 2016, President Obama’s administration released file 17. The record had names of people who were involved in the September 11 attacks (Van). This document contains three dozen people as the drivers of the attack. The intelligence of Saudi and the embassy of Saudi Arabia to Washington were behind the attack. Thus, the attack weakened the relationship between the two countries of the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Conclusion

The 9/11 attack has a spectrum of effects that will forever be in the minds of American society and the world at large. The result is crucially evident in the economic sector, the social sector, political force, and the health sector. The attack claimed 2,977 lives and over 25,000 injuries. Politically, the US troops went to Afghanistan in an attempt to silence the Al-Qaeda.

Further, the troops went to Iraq to curb the weapons of mass destruction made by Saddam. The economic effect of the attack was the destruction of infrastructure and buildings (Trad). Various trade centers were closed and thus harming the New York and America economically. The health effects of workers around the region are long-term, leading to subsequent deaths. Generally, the 9/11 attack has an array of impacts on society in all spheres.
