naturally social animals whose existence is marked with various essential
relationships and interactions (Subramanian, 71). The traditional form of human
the interaction was characterized by close, face to face, human connection.
However, the advancement of technology has revolutionized how humans interact
in the recent past. From the use of letters and telephones to mobile phones,
and now, the internet has brought with it a faster means of socializing and
communicate: social media. Social media enable people to create online
communities that they can chat, socialize, share ideas, personal messages, and
other content. The merits of social media have been highlighted and discussed
comprehensively by several scholars; however, this study will focus on the
negative impact of social media, particularly on interpersonal communication.
With the hypothesis that
social media negatively affects interpersonal communication, the paper explores
three crucial research questions. Firstly, how a lack of facial expressions and
gestures associated with social media communication affects interpersonal
communication. How the allure of anonymity and false identity creates in
genuine personal connection on social media. Finally, how social media kills

The key to note is that
social media will continue to be part and parcel of modern human interaction
medium. This then dictates that studies focus on how best this medium can
enhance rather than discourage interpersonal communication. Despite its
approach of looking at the demerits, this study endeavors to add to the scanty
literature on the impacts of social media on interposernal communication and how
best to use it.
