The internet has provided a favorable environment on which bullying can conveniently occur. The anonymous environment that is offered by the internet has resulted in an increased number of cyber assaults. As such, cyberbullying is a modern phenomenon that poses severe challenges in society. Cyberbullying stands out as a unique form of harassment that differs substantially from offline bullying. Teenage bullies often bully others to affirm their power while others do it for revenge. The issue is of great concern considering the high number of teenagers online. It is apparent that adolescent aggression has increased because of the growth of technology and easy access to information primarily through social media. Disturbingly, reliable evaluations have indicated that instances of cyberbullying are rising at an alarming rate. This is worrying because research has suggested that cyberbullying causes severe short-term and long-term effects on the victims. Similar to other harassment behavior, cyberbullying is an activity that is mainly promoted by three main aspects that include relationships, control, and power.
Through this paper, I intend to discuss the impacts of cyberbullying on teenagers. Accordingly, I will address issues such as depression that victims of online bullying undergo. Victims of bullying often develop pressured feelings which make them hopeless. I will also discuss how cyberbullying result in isolation that makes the victims develop suicidal thoughts. The victims are also likely to feel embarrassed and humiliated by the ill reputation established online. As such, I intend to explain how such feelings make the victims develop a perception that they are possibly bad in other people’s view. In summary, I will focus on describing why effective measures should be adopted to curb cyberbullying by highlighting various detrimental consequences of the practice, especially among teenagers.
