Importance of “Favoring Many” In Democracy

Athenians established the first world’s democratic constitution in 510 BC. The new ruling method was advanced into its classical form by the changes that were brought about by Pericles in nearly half a century later after establishment. It was during Pericles’ ruling in Athens that the most significant achievements took place in Greece (Taylor, 2018). In contrast, the other countries continued with the different forms of leadership, such as hierarchical and monarchical. Democracy itself is a leadership technique where decision making is characterized by equality among all the members of the group. This leadership tool is beneficial as it helps in improving the participants’ character and also has good policies and laws. For instance, the Athenian citizenship gave full participation in each decision that was made in the state regardless of the class or wealth. The political life was limited to males of native parentage and excluded slaves, children, women, and alien residents. Still, this act of equality in the political arena led to the evolvement of the idea of universal egalitarianism (Taylor, 2018).

Democracy sounds ethical as it opposes the ruling of one man over the other. Here no individual or group of persons is vested with decision power. Instead, the power is vested to the whole community, thereby promoting the common welfare of the citizens (Loubser and Steenekamp, 2017). A citizen is given the ability to determine the ruling government and the state policies by us of a vote and also has the power to impeach the elected leader when he/she presents an uncherished image. According to Mill’s script, democracy helps in strengthening the country’s love as citizens are proud of the government they made on their own and also feel that the rulers are their servants contrary to other styles where they are masters. This helps in nurturing patriotism spirit and nationalism of the citizens and also evoking the continuous obedience to the law.

According to one of the ancient scholars, the democratic leadership method is a better method of making legislation as it is, epistemic, strategic, and also helps in improving the moral standards of the democratic citizens. Strategically, democratic leadership pressures the decision-makers to consider the rights, opinions, and interests of the people in the larger society. Here, political powers are shared between several people, and thus more people are considered as compared to other ruling techniques such as monarchy or aristocracy (Pares et al. 2017). Democracy is epistemic in that it is thought to be more reliable in decision making since it helps the members to discover the right decisions. The method tends to centralize people together during decision-making, thereby scoring many information sources and also assessing the laws and policies critically. This criterion proves to be a giant in digging the information pertaining to the interests of people and even mechanisms of advancing the interests — more extended discussions in a democracy help in assessing the moral ideas guiding the decision-makers.

Democracy is mainly concerned with making collective decisions that force the members to stand for themselves. The design impacts positively on the character of the participants, which differ from other ruling forms. Democratic societies help people to think rationally and carefully and, more so, encourages them to be highly autonomous (Loubser and Steenekamp, 2017). It is also believed that democracy enhances the morality level of citizens. When participants take part in decision-making, they listen to, justify themselves to, and even think in the interests of others, and at this point, they think in universal justice. Here, the democratic system tends to improve the morality, autonomy, and rationality of the participants.

By considering countries that are still using a democratic system of leadership, studies show that these nations are succeeding in all life dimensions. For instance, Norway is top-racked democratic states in the world, which have made voting as an obligation to every citizen. With this mindset, the country has advanced infrastructure development, an improved healthcare sector, quality education, and quality life, whereas other anti-democratic countries such as China have tried to prove the assertion that democratic ruling focuses on a more strong economic advancement (Pares et al. 2017). Conversely, Autocratic governments place restrictions on their citizens from contributing to economic activities. This results in an economic policy that hinders capital generation, thus imposing an adverse setback and enormous suffering on the general public.

No doubt, today, our world is facing many obstructions and impediments in the form of diverse concerns. Every nation is at sixes and sevens and in the state of chaos. There is a need for the well-ordered manifestation of government to deal with these immense issues, which can provide stability in all corridors of life. That efficient and systematized form of government is the democracy that grants the right to fabricates room of opportunities and dispenses sense of reliability to every citizen prevailing in any nook and corner of the world.
