Incest and Related policies
I am writing to express my great concern on the policies and regulation that that have been put forth against incest. I feel that the policies be reviewed on the basis of rationale, logic and ethics. In my writing, I am not categorically stating that incest is good , but I argue that just like other moral related issue such as homosexuality, there is the need to scrutinize incest because just because something is morally wrong to people, it does not imply it is bad. I believe that people who are caught in the act of incest receive unfair punishment and the current laws and policies are against the progress of the society by limiting individual’s choice and freedom.
I have noted that when people here of incest, what come in their mind is rape and pedophilia. This is a misconception that needs to be done way with and we should view incest of people who are of age as a form of social interaction. For instance, when a brother and sister have sexual intercourse and none of them feel violated by the other; is it not a normal relationship? I do not understand why they should be punished. What could make it wrong is if one of them was not of age or there was a case of rape. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
I have noted that there are old arguments that demonized incest and which need to be done away with as they are just a cancer eating away the cohesion of the society. For instance, there some individuals who argue that incest is not natural. At this point, I get rather confused on the actual meaning of this notion. People need to differentiate between what they perceive to be immoral and that which is not natural (Moosa, 2011). Just because one sees something to be bad it does not mean that it is not natural.
One crucial opinion that I realized creates maximum confusion and derails the debate on the issue of debate is the claim that it results in creation of deformed children (Herzog, 2011). I believe this statement is not entirely true as there is no relationship between handicaps and genetics due to incest as any child can be born handicapped. On the other hand, we cannot quantify people with the urge to reproduce on the possibility of getting handicapped children; this is wrong and unjust. What makes argument even wrong is quantifying sex as just an act of having children which show the further how the claim is not solid.
What question we should ask ourselves is whether sexual activities of two consenting adults should concern us? It is the same question that should be extended to individuals who are against homosexuality. It worth noting that it is not our business to know what two consenting adults will do as longer as no one is harmed. Isn’t this the actual essence of law and polices; to create balance and order in the society. It is time to start treating incest with a different eye just as we treat other social elements such as sexual inequality and racism. I don’t think there is such thing as moral outrage in incest which has not harmed anybody and it is the high time we start respecting the adults’ rights and stop drawing lines based on issues such as genetics.
