influence of hip-hop music in China

Introduction

In China, hip-hop began playing at nightclubs initially. It started well and performed regularly in 1992; in 1994, it created the first hip-hop club. Hip-hop acquired high demand and prominence following the film made by Eminem in 2002 (Bureau, 2017). Films significantly boosted the development of hip-hop niches in China. The art of hip hop, however, has profoundly challenged the country’s self-restraint and values. There was a substantial impact on the views, ideals, and old culture of the present generation. Recently “Rap of China,” an internet reality show about hip-hop music with over 2.5 billion views, has put hip-hop music on the spotlight in China. Most of the unknown and young rappers have emerged from this reality show as compared to the olden days where they did not have a platform to showcase their talent.

Methodology

This study focused on the hip-hop culture in China was reached up by analyzing various internet articles on hip-hop. Most of the articles were internet websites and even making comments on multiple interviewed people on the art of hip-hop. Therefore the mixed method of getting sources of information was used to reach the study’s aim.

Impact of hip-hop on cultures

The hip-hop declares its base on socialism, which is sadly unable to uphold the principles reliably. Rap music glorifies sexually explicit literature, illegal substances, and abuse far eliminated from China’s original cultures (Croucher and Condon, 2019). Effy’s words that hip-hop music makes fun of the vulnerable and the females quoted in a State newspaper in global times. Ai Jun, a reporter, portrays hip hop also in Chinese and especially US artists as vulgar and musical types, which musicians like using eye-catching words and abusive language. Taking the “Rap of China” as an example, “gangsta” rap is a music that explains the moral degradation of hip hop culture. Many Chinese regard hip-hop culture as an African-American culture of origin. The African-Americans battled gang violence, discrimination, and inequality, according to them. Therefore, as their defense mechanism, they did some defiance while seeking hope. In Bohan Phoenix’s words, he said, a famous Chinese-American musician, “We no longer live in that word.” He attacked those of old American rappers who were conservatives and called them unhealthy, and on television named them children who are never alive, and which demand bitchiness. They are more interested in Los Angeles artists around 1990, rather than making music to address their problems as Chinese rappers. The perceptions of Chinese musicians and Chinese social networks explored in “Made in China” and “WeChat” one of the biggest record deals (Flew, Ryan and Su, 2019). This is significant proof that hip-hop is antagonistic and that it can be a catalyst or a danger to Chinese social stability.

Hip-hop impact on vogue in China

As described above, Hip Hop in China has become more popular and is the genre that has introduced streetwear into it. The music has a lot to do with streetwear products like Stussy, Supreme, and A Bathing Ape. The actor and a Chinese superstar named Kris Wu wore a box-logo t-shirt by Supreme for the first segment of the series. Many global brands prominently display through a large-scale public show(Gu, O’Connor, and Ng, 2019). A few of these new modes include the Off-White, a luxury brand founded by an American stylist Virgil Abloh, who has had a significant influence on streetwear. Most famous hip hop competitors tend to wear off-white hats, trousers, and hoodies when performing their music. The Chinese viewers and the spectators were fascinated with its signature, textual decoration, and the white and black striped designs. Most of these audiences are young people under the age of 35, who are the bulk and have developed new transformations according to their favorite celebrity preference.

Impact rate of government censorship on hip-hop

The government introduced a bunch of rules that restricted hip-hop music in China, which were not taken positively by the youth and people who loved the genre. Then it was deduced that there was no emphasis on censorship on the restriction of hip hop cultures or that the culture as a whole was mainly disturbed, but the unexpected, explosive admiration and deep overseas origins among the teens (Ong, 2018). In other words, China’s censorship is primarily about the size of people united without government control, and that is the reason the government has inflamed by the need to ban hip-hop music. All these limitations and constraints are driven by the desire to build a massive fan base that they have accumulated. This is the motivation behind why in spite of each prominence hip-hop has picked up, it is itself ruinous dependent on the restriction of the country.

Conclusion

The hip-hop industry is a massive sector that influences various cultural, social, governmental, and economic dimensions in China. Therefore, developing adequate initiatives to govern the industries is better for the government. If they have to limit huge amassments at all, they should do it reasonably so as not to ruin the talents and entertainments of people. The industry has a part to play in ensuring that standards, honor, principles, and ethics are maintained in the country’s culture. They should resist instances that could lead to the abuse of drugs and substances, degradation, and discrimination of sex and race. They should operate collaboratively to build good ties with people, the government, and the community.
