According to Lup, (247), the media was developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The app allows its Subscribers to be in position to upload photos as well as videos. The services provided by the app allows people to make some changes on the photos according to one’s test and preferences before posting on walls. Like any other social media, instagram has enormous impact to its users in different perspectives, both positively and negatively as discussed below.
Firstly, according to Lup, (248), the app enhances communication among different groups of people either in the same locality or different places. At the same time the media helps in finding relations which are not possible in person. Also, the media assist in providing education on mental health.in addition, the app enables the users to be aware of their surrounding always (Lup, 249). All these benefits are concerned with improving the wellbeing of an individual.
However, despite such benefits, several negativism have been related with instagram app. On the media most of people do not displace their real life situation. Most users tend to compare their lives with other on the media forgetting that it is just photos and videos uploaded. According to Lup (250) that act comparing one’s life with another at long last leads to living a life behind his reach which in turn may be a burden to them. Many people suffer on social media because of their envy to others.
To take a classic snaps that can gather large numbers of likes and comments, many users of instagram spend a lot of time. Once, uploaded and they doesn’t gun down likes worth the effort of user, disappointed engraves the user of the app (Lup, 252). As a result, the individual may end up hating himself and even undermining his value small thing like his/her photos not being liked. This may lead to isolation.
In many circumstances, most of instagram users tend to make use of the media in evening hours after the day’s activities. Anxiety and envy that get occupy one’s mind from what we see on social media keeps one on high alert over the night preventing him/her from falling asleep (Lup, 248). In addition, the light produced by the mobile phones has an impact on melatonin hormone that helps us feel tired.
According to Lup, (2548), connections is important for human beings. Each person seeks to connect with people within and far in order to better their living. However, by spending more time on phones just being impressed by friend’s social media life than their real life, it becomes a hard to create an important connection. Thus during moment of need such an individual might end up feeling he/she is isolated as no one might be around during such hard times.
Instagram is an images focused. It seems like a competition of who will post the best captures. As a result, if one doesn’t match the others in terms of posting, an individual may feel in the wrong group. They develop a feeling of inadequacy which might lower their self-esteem (Lup, 253). In addition, if they match their friends, the media makes them feel included. In turn, they start ignoring their real life friendships and focus on the new online relations where comparison is talk of the day.
In conclusion, instagram is doing more harm to its users than how they are benefiting from it. Thus for the sake of maintaining personal mental health and wellbeing, the youth in particular should minimize the rate of using the media.
