In this paper, the person that I have selected is a 62-year-old man, Mr. Johnson, who is a nurse by profession. Johnson has worked as a nurse in a public hospital for a period of twenty-one years. Before then, he had worked with a private hospital immediately after graduating from college.
- Ways that the Individual Meets Levinson’s Novice Phase
Mr. Johnson meets the Levinson’s novice phase in different ways that are based on the decisions, tasks, and changes he made at the ages between seventeen and thirty-three years.
At the age of seventeen, having completed his high school studies, he decided to enroll in a college at the age of eighteen years. During this time, he chose to study nursing despite of the many suggestions from his parents and friends. According to him, being a health officer was one of his major dreams and hence his decision was based on his this idea. Another way in which the man meets the novice phase involves his decision to expand his knowledge by expanding his training and educational skills. At the age of twenty-three, he enrolled for a BSN master’s degree. During this time, he majored in nursing and public health administration which was his childhood dream. At the age of twenty-eight, he starts working in a private hospital as an intern nurse. This marked the beginning of his dream occupation. - Problem faced by the Individual in Reaching the Career Goal during the Novice Phase
One of the major problem faced by the individual is pressure from the parents. His parents wanted him to study business administration and become an accountant professional. However, this was not his dream. His decision to study nursing faced great resistance from the parents who almost refused to pay his college fees.
- Ways in Which the Individual meets Levinson’s Settling down Phase (33-40)
Mr. Johnson meets the Levinson’s settling down phase through acquiring promotion in his first job, becoming a parent, and getting employment in the public hospital. At the age of thirty-four, Johnson was hired as a full-time nurse in the private hospital. It was at the same time that he assumed the roles of a parent after him and his wife getting their first-born child. Lastly, at the age of thirty-six, the he landed a higher-paying job as a senior nurse in a public hospital.
- Ways that the Individual Meets Levinson’s Mid-life Transition Phase (40-45)
At the age of forty-one, Johnson realized that he has been spending much of his time concentrating on work-related activities as opposed to his family. He, therefore, adjusts his working hours by demanding to have assistants so that he could delegate duties and have some time with his family. Also, he realized that the job alone could not guarantee his wealth accumulation. Hence, he utilizes his savings and a loan to begin investing in real estate. As a result, he faces the problem of balancing between his nursing work and business.

At the age of fifty-one, the Johnson was given more responsibilities at work by being made in charge of public health administration within his region. At the same time, his real estate company was doing great and needed more attention. His concentration at work and business led to family problems. It was due t this situation that his wife threatened to divorce him.

Mr. Johnson overcame the challenge of meeting the high demand of his first employer in the private hospital. He overcame this challenge by working hard and closely with is seniors. Also, Johnson got married during his early stage of his career development. He managed to balance his demanding job and his new marriage which required most of his attention.
- Challenges the Individual Overcame during the Middle-Part of their Career (40-60)
Mr. Johnson was able to learn and cope up with a huge organization after landing a new job with a public hospital which was huge compared to his first job in the private hospital. In addition, he was able to overcome the challenge of balancing his work and family affairs by requesting for assistants and delegating his duties. Lastly, he overcame the challenge of managing his business and work.
- Protective Factors that Might have helped the Man Deal with Life Experiences
Some of the factors that might have helped the man include his strong belief in his dreams, his ability to work hard, and the realization of the importance of the family. Despite his parents’ wish, he believed in his dream of becoming a nurse. Also, he worked hard to succeed in his career and business establishment. Lastly, his realization of the importance of the family made him seek for a balance between work and family. It also helped him overcome the challenge of breaking up with his wife.

This study has enabled me to realize that individual’s life goes through stages and every stage requires a critical decision. I have realized that the decisions that we make at every stage have impacts on our career, family, and social lives. Also, it has helped me to realize that every stage of life has challenges and it requires effort and critical-thinking to overcome them.
