Introduction to Criminal Justice

All people remain subjects of fundamental rights despite the conviction. Thus, the limitation of rights should not dig deeper into barring the practicing of fundamental rights. Most of the prisoners are convicts of criminal acts. However, the prison and correctional centers mitigate the negated conduct of the prisoners. Statesville prison was picked for a case study. The unfolding of processes and activities in prison sheds light on the scenarios at the prisons.

In the correctional centers, the officers in charge are responsible for monitoring, treating, supervising people who have been admitted to the correctional center. Since prison should serve to rehabilitate the prisoners, the management should ensure that the reformation is achieved. According to Duwe (2017),  the prisons programs the prisoners by encouraging the change for better. The programming aims to change the behavior of the prisoners (Duwe, 2017). Sergeant Baldwin is in charge of the maintenance and running of the Statesville Prison. Therefore all the mandates of triggering reformation in the prisoners are upon his shoulders. To maintain law and orders, Sergeant locks down the inmate, thus limiting their interaction and maintaining easy monitoring. The confining of prisoners limits their movements; therefore, enabling the management to control any situation with much ease. By letting the prisoners walk freely, the management processes can be more laborious to attain. Therefore, in cases where the prisoners are allowed to be out of the cell, they are allowed in limited and manageable numbers.

Simkayta Winfield is an inmate who was convicted to serve 63 years jail term. Winfield was convicted of drug dealing and shooting a man to death in a street argument. Winfield has psychological suffering when he remembers his two children. The children, whom he got at seventeen and twenty-one years old respectively, are his most concern. However, he has to manage the stress by engaging his mind in busy activities while in the sell as private phone calls are restricted. According to Duwe (2017), prisoners who fail to manage their feelings are involved in more crimes even after release from prison. Therefore, the prisons should offer and ample space and time for the meditation of the prisoner. The meditation can allow the rethinking of the past and planning for an upright future.

Most of the inmates exercise violence, which obliges the officers to keep them locked. The presence of the armed guards serves two purposes in the goal of correctional programs. Firstly, their presence serves to warn the potential violence partakers. Secondly, their presence helps to ensure that peace is at its peak for the vulnerable prisoners. According to Duwe (2017), the misconducts of the prisoner can be triggered by the management skills exercised. The management should ensure that the ratio of guards to the prisoners is reasonable. Thus, the presence of the armed guards alters the psychology of the prisoner to cease any violence act and guarantee safety for the most vulnerable and weak.

Since the prison is designed for men, many homosexuality cases can be randomly recorded. As a result, the locking of potential partakers in specialized cells minimizes the instances. For instance, Jerico Jones had to be locked in isolation to prevent the vice of homosexuality. The vulnerability experienced due to lack of opposite genders has to be controlled through restriction and being locked down. Jerico states that the prison has placed them in the situation of homosexuality. Prison can build and at the same time, demolish the character of the convicts (Duwe, 2017). The dominance of homosexuality in prisons affects the convicts who had a different view on the act. Since the prison hosts only men, the management should work to protect the vulnerable and manage the partakers.

The condition in the State field prison can be improved in various ways. Firstly, increasing the guard forces to counter any violence or vice portrayed by the inmates. The environment created in prison can determine the conduct of the prisoners (Duwe, 2017). Thus, the managed environment can be robust for the reformation of the convicts. Secondly, the action of isolation should be done with much diligence. Loneliness can lead to psychological turmoil for the inmates. By observing psychology principles, the management should ensure that the separation addresses a particular issue. Equally, the prison should allow the connection of the inmates to the outside world to maintain a positive mindset. For instance, if Winfield is allowed to interact with his children, he will be motivated to reform. According to (Duwe, 2017), effective programming of the prisoner can induce changes and lower the recidivism. Effective programming will thus ensure that the released prisoners are modeled into responsible and productive citizens. The effectiveness of the correctional processes can be calibrated through positive post-release employment outcome, which will, in turn, favor the society.

In conclusion, even the convicts of crime should face justice. The prison and correctional centers should aim at achieving their role in rehabilitating criminals. Effective programming of the prisoners can help in the achievement of positive post-release outcomes. Suppression can lead to the spirit of vengeance. Equally, the isolation of prisoners, if not well supervised, can lead to psychological turmoil to the prisoners. Loneliness gives a chance for overthinking. Overthinking is a disorder that can result in various negated results. Thus, barring the prisoner from interacting with friends and family can insert a negative mind. By interacting with friends and relatives, prisoners can develop a sense of humanity and will possible practice it when released. Lastly, the prison should ensure to protect the fundamental rights of the prisoners. Despite the limited rights of the prisoner, the management should protect them from activities that negatively affect their psychology and personalities.
