Islam In America
The Islamic religion is fast growing in the current world. A lot of Muslims can now be found even in areas that were predominated by other faiths. In the United States of America, there is a steady growth in the number of Muslims. A lot of Muslims in this country are either black Americans or those from Asia. There is an increase in the migration of Arabs to the United States of America, and they go to study or look for job opportunities in most cases. Those that study is, in many cases, young.
The hardships and problems faced by Muslims and Arabs living in the United States of Ameri were highlighted by Moustafa Bayoumi in his book ” how it feels to be a problem.” After the 9/11 attack, Muslims, especially from Asia, were alienated. It was supposed that the attack was carried out by a Muslim radical group called Al-Qaeda, and this made the government of America suspicious of the majority of the Muslims. Rasha had been fled and her family given a permanent residence, Sami had finished his contract with the marines, Akram had moved back to the United Arab Emirates, and his business was doing good. Rami is busy juggling from work to work, but his father was deported back to Jordan. Lina was now living in Virginia, and she had gotten another baby; Omar was currently working in New York, and Yasmin was a student of law.
These young Arabs faced tough times living in the United States after the 9/11 attack. They were racially abused and discriminated against since they were seen as terrorists even though they were law-abiding citizens. The anti-muslim campaign hit hard states that had a lot of Muslims, and the target was Arab Muslims. Some allegations muslims were radicalized to join terror groups that were at the center of attacks, including the 9/11 attack.
In any society, there occurs fragmentations and differences. These differences should not in any way, be the basis of discrimination. The minority are, in most cases, discriminated due to their religion, race, gender, physical ability, or disability. The perception made Rasha lose her freedom, where she was detained together with her family. She was in the same prison with her mother, but her elder brother was in another prison, and her two little brothers were left alone because they were American citizens. They were humiliated because of their race and religion, and this was a violation of fundamental human rights. Rasha told Bayoumi that many Arab Muslims were facing the same challenge of being illegally detained with false accusations of being connected to terrorists. Rasha’s family had fled their native country (Syria) due to violence, and they sought refuge in the United States of America.
Sami is a Christian who comes from Egypt and Palestine. He is a corp with the marines. They are sent to Iraq on a peacekeeping mission. Other soldiers see the Iraq residents as terrorists, but he sees them as innocent persons who avoid being in trouble. After the 9/11 attack on the twin towers by a plane controlled by al Qaeda militia, Americans said that the Arabs made the shooting. It hurt the ethnic profiling of Arabs with terrorism.
Yasmin was more of a politician, and when she vied to be a class secretary, she won. She was not allowed to go to the school dance despite her position in the government of the school. The students’ affairs coordinator made her resign, and this humiliation and discrimination angered her. She uses her free time to research anti-discriminationn law.
