Jazz Legends: Arturo Sandoval: Performance Review

The performance by Jazz Legends, led by Arturo Sandoval, remains one of the most exceptional jazz performances in the history of Jazz due to the outstanding skills displayed. The concert took place in Cabot Theater in Beverly on July 27, 2018. Through the performance, it is apparent that Sandoval’s plays the trumpet in an unassailable manner. His technique and chops can only be matched by few performers such as Faddis, and Shavers. He has an extraordinary range as his tonguing is lighting fast. More so, he has a vast experience in running the chord and embraces harmony in the musical art. Through his skills, he has influenced a new sound into Jazz music.

While performing at Beverly, Sandoval’s prodigious skills were evident through using blizzard notes along with the ability to use the bottom and top note of the trumpet. Commonly, the lead trumpet player has a range of 4 octaves, while most players have 3 octaves. Few lead players like Maynard Ferguson and Cat Anderson can go beyond 4 octaves. However, for Sandoval, he can even get beyond the stratosphere into what is commonly referred to as the pedal range. He gets lower to the tuba range too.

Through the concern, it is apparent that Sandoval has a big personality like that of famous musicians and pays attention to energy, few quiet moments along with mellow intervals. As the leader, he does not take the risk but plays a crucial role in defining the sound. The members of the group show a brilliant performance too and are gifted as Sandoval, but cannot match him. They complement his performance effectively, which leaves the audience demanding more.

The other members of the band include Max Haymer, Tiki Pasillas, John Belzaguy, Sarpay Ozcagatay, and Mike Tucker, who is playing piano, percussion, drums, flute, and tenor sax, respectively. Although I am never interested in the flute as a musical instrument, the performance by Ozcagatay is excellent and impressive as he displays his talent using different flowing ideas.

The concert begins with slow defining statements by Sandoval along with Tucker on tenor. This followed by a rhythmic section that kicks with a high gear in unison, virtuosic and fast as the trumpet and tenor play the chorus of ‘Cherokee’ by Clifford Brown. Every musician goes solo at some point displaying their talent. Then Sandoval scats solo that includes quoting from “take a train” that sounds like his composition. His unique trumpet playing skills are a product of his mentor, Dizzy Gillespie, who was a popular scatter.

In the concert, Sandoval displays his ability to improvise, just like other musicians who do not have a set of the chronology of the songs to perform. Irrespectively of the fact that he plays different songs randomly, his supporting artists successfully follow him precisely and seamlessly. All the musicians in the band display confidence and plays their tools with ease, which shows their mastery of skills and unrivaled teamwork. Even when there are incidences when the trumpet is creating unusual and squealing sounds; however, Sandoval does not seem to flinch or straining. The audience is surprised by the breadth of notes that Sandoval can take. Incredibly, Sandoval makes some notes as low as tuba and as high as a siren.

There are times when he, Sandoval, takes the trumpet down, and he casually appears as an ordinary artist in the group. Meanwhile, the other artists continue to entertain the audience as they search downward rather than at each other. They appear to be communicating with one another, not verbally, but musically. Sandoval gives his approval through nodding and smiling as well as bobbing his head. That displays his appreciation of the background music, sending an indication to the audience that they are performing as they as planned.

Throughout the concert, it is apparent that horn instrumentalist, Ozcagatay, does not interact with the other instrumentalists like the guitarist with ease. This is because he needs to take a breath and focus on creating constructive noise that is aligned to the music being played. Thus, Sandoval particularly pays attention to drums, guitarist, and saxophonist. This is because a symbiotic relationship among all the band members is essential in Jazz. The importance of relationships and music technology is revealed since they are playing similar pieces. Improvisations are critical for bonding the members, as evidenced when the saxophone hits a single, which Sandoval approves by claiming that he loves its, which are among the incidences that he speaks.

The “night in Tunisia” is among the most significant music they perform as each artist goes solo at some point. The performance reflects ideal jazz music that is characterized by improvisation, blue notes, and swing. The performance related to the historical context of jazz music.

“Blues for Dizzy” is one of the songs performed during the concert as an appreciation and dedication to Dizzy Gillespie, who mentored him. The song stretches almost fifteen minutes and has shades of hues and music. That displays loyalty to Dizzy, whom Sandoval claims that he made him whom he is today. Sandoval began his jazz career in communist Cuba and has become a legend. Although he started his music career at the age of 12, in Havana, he has a significant influence on the American Jazz, as evidenced by the attendance of the concert. He remains a renowned classical artist who trains artists on playing the flugelhorn and trumpet.
