John proctor admits to the adultery claim because he disdains hypocrisy, and to defend his wife, who faces witchcraft charges. Mary warren, one of the girls who work with Abigail, confesses about using fake witchcraft fits, but the rest of the girls deny the allegations. Proctor opts to admit committing adultery with Abigail and explains it as the reason his wife, Elizabeth, fired her. Abigail and the girls use witch trials as an attempt to avenge against john for ending the affair.she also targets to discredit Elizabeth. At the end of the play, john protocol refuses to admit to the witch charges. He minds about his reputation and self-image. Confessing to adultery is a lesser crime than confessing to witchcraft. People agreeing to lechery receive a jail sentence while those that admit to witchcraft receive a death punishment.

Reverend hale is tormented by guilt for instigating punishment for witchcraft in Salem. He feels responsible for the breach of justice in Salem and the death of seventy-two innocent people on the grounds of witchcraft. At the end of the third act, reverend hale leaves the court since he is frustrated by the irrational proceedings of the court. After leaving the court, Danforth, the court judge, continues to convict people to murder due to witchcraft and, a lot of innocent people die. Reverend Hale, in the fourth act, returns to the courtroom to convince the people accused of witchcraft to sign to false witchcraft confessions and end up imprisoned rather than die. The reverend is aware that it is too late for the victims to get pardoned for their crimes. Reverend hale seeks to find peace of mind by clearing his conscience of the breeched justice.
