JUSTICE: MIND YOUR MOTIVE

The lecture is focused on Immanuel Kant, a philosopher, who explains that the consequence of the decision should not influence our actions. A person ought not to do something right merely because if he does not do the right thing, it will negatively affect him. A person ought to do the right thing because it is right. Immanuel Kant is also opposed to utilitarianism. According to Kant, utilitarianism equals to using an individual. Say, as an example, a person will only hang around you or be kind to you because they benefit in one way or another from hanging around you. If you were to stop giving them the advantage, they get from you, and then they would stop hanging around you. This, in simple terms, is using a person.

Immanuel Kant emphasizes that human life is of great value. Therefore, no one ought to use a person for their selfish gains. An individual is sacred and deserves to be accorded some form of respect. Individuals are rational beings, which means that human beings can reason. Therefore, individuals ought to reason before deciding to do an action. Also, human beings are autonomous beings. This means that we can choose freely. Therefore, we are responsible for determining our actions.

Kant half agreed with utilitarian views in that we, as human beings, wish to enjoy the good things in life. We do not want to experience some form of pain or suffering. However, the aspect of how we do it is what Kant disagrees with. The element of using people to escape pain or suffering is what Kant disagrees with. Again, Kant insists that we should not do deeds only out of duty. We should do things because it is the right thing to do. It should not have anything else added to do it, and that is what morality is all about; doing the right thing because it is correct.

VOX GUN VIOLENCE

The United States experiences a high rate of gun violence than all other developed countries around the world. From 2000 to 2014, the United States recorded the highest number of mass shootings indicating how gun violence is a significant problem in the United States. The frequency of these mass shootings keeps on getting high with each new day. The trend became worrying to a point where the President at that time stated that he did not wish to go out again and offer condolences to families of victims of mass shootings. Still, the United States also has the highest number of suicides among the countries, and the highest population commits suicide by using a gun.

Most of the people have resorted to suicide by a gun since when they use guns, they are sure that they will die. The highest population involved in suicide is males and mostly white males. The number of gun suicides has been increasing every day while the number of gun homicides has been decreasing. However, the United States is still the highest when it comes to homicides by the use of a gun. This has become an enormous problem, especially since the number of deaths caused by guns in the United States is more than all the other deaths combined. Therefore, the United States ought to establish a solution to this menace.

JOHN OLIVER DEATH PENALTY

The discussion is on whether the death penalty should be in existence. Before the early 1950s, people were punished in cruel ways. Those doing the execution did not feel empathetic for the victims as they executed them. They did it in very ruthless manners. However, things are not as brutal as before. Once a person is sentenced to the death penalty, they are supposed to die under circumstances where it does not cause them further pain.

There have been some cases of botched executions where a person being killed gets to suffer more than they should like in instances where when the people were being electrocuted, they caught fire. This ought not to be the case at all. John Oliver disagrees with the death penalty as he believes that in some cases, the person receiving the penalty usually is innocent. However, he insists that that is just his opinion and could be debated, but he believes that there are other ways of punishing a person other than the death penalty.
