His transition from Spanish to English was notable, as it drew a line for more Latin musicians to get international recognition, contributing to the Latin Pop Explosion.
Ricky Martin
Ricky Martin was born as Enrique Martin Morales on 24th December 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Spain. Initially singing in Spanish language, Ricky Martin later transitioned into singing English. The transition attracted a worldwide following and liking, increasing his musical sales by millions. He also doubles up as a stage and TV actor, notably in Mexico and the USA. The Latin Pop Explosion
The Latin pop explosion is considered as the period when Latin music was widely played in America (Bender 738). The explosion was set in place by Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin la Vida Loca’ song, produced just after the Grammy Awards. Ricky Martin had just won The Best Latin Pop Performance Award with his ‘Vuelva’ song. The song was done in English, making it easier for Ricky Martin to reach the English speaking audience. As a result, most people identified him with the song. The song has received many nominations and won about thirteen awards. The song was very successful both in the American and international music markets.
The main feature of the explosion was to bring the Latino culture to limelight in America (Fiol-Matta, 45). Before the explosion, few non-Latino Americans and people all over the world knew about the Latino culture. Report a report appearing on Times Magazine read “Latin Music Goes Pop!” praising Ricky Martin’s performance (Mayorga, 565). This attracted many people to viewing and consequently liking his music. In the years that followed, his popularity grew, and much attention was given to the Latin Pop and Latin culture in general. People started to understand and listen to more Latin musicians who had followed suit and transitioned to singing in English.
After the Ricky Martin’s performance and recognition of the Latino culture, other musicians like Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, and Jenifer Lopez have followed suit by producing English songs despite their Latino backgrounds (Bender 723). Latin culture had not been well represented in the music scene all over the world. With English culture being the most popular and easily recognized all over the world, Ricky Martin realized the need to have his own culture represented on a similar stage. Martin’s success at the Grammy managed to some extent to level the playing ground for all cultures in the musical scene. He proved to the world that one doesn’t have to understand the language or the culture for them to enjoy music.
Moreover, by enhancing the recognition of the Latino culture among the Americans, Ricky Martin was able to close the gap that separated the two. Ricky Martin was famous among all Americans, and he enjoyed a considerable backing of his fellow Latinos in America. Due to cultural support, politicians in America opted to use him in their political activities (McClintock). His involvement was perceived as a way of appealing to the Latinos. Latino population in America is high, necessitating the need for their support and endorsement to political leaders. Through his involvement in the political campaigns, Ricky Martin demonstrated that Latinos are also significant figures when it comes to political issues in America.
Ricky Martin will forever be remembered and recognized as the first Latino artist to have international recognition. The evolution and changes that have been witnessed in the reception of Latino music worldwide is still owed to Ricky Martin. He knew what he had to do to appeal to the English speaking audiences, but still maintain his culture. His performance at the Grammy’s in 1999 put Latin music to the same level as the English culture. The ability to include English lyrics in his songs was a breakthrough that was worth emulation by other Latino artists. His representation of Latino culture in his music won him recognition even in political scenes where he was used by politicians to appeal to the Latino populations.
