Leadership: Influence, Power, Advocacy &Authenticity
Leaders have a responsibility and duty to inspire others so that they can attain great success and results. Successful leaders have the ability to identify and use appropriate strategies at the right moment. Imperatively, power, advocacy, influence and authenticity are critical aspects of successful and better as well as effective leadership (Films Media Group, 2011).
No leadership exists without influence since it is only influential individuals that lead other. The implication is that once a leader attains positive perception as well as visibility, people and communities listen to what they assert and implore them to do. Based on these qualities, a leader can influence those that she or he leads as people start to trust and follow the leaders as they want to as opposed to compulsion to do so irrespective of the position or title that he or she holds in society and organization.
Assigned leaders get their power when they allocate tasks and responsibilities (Bacon, 2020). As such, rewards, appreciation, and feedback as well as providing opportunities and even punishing based on performance are different ways that leaders exercise their power over those they lead. Leaders can provide rewards through compliments as well as tangible benefits. Conversely, they can reprimand and withhold promotions and other rewards as punishment.
Leaders can also advocate for different aspects like employees and colleagues, for instance in nursing. Advocacy entails actions to ascertain sufficient allocation of resources as well as promotion of positive work environments (Hofmeyer, 2020). For instance, nurse leaders can advocate for active participation of the nursing staff in decision making in healthcare facilities.
Additionally, an effective leader can illustrate authentic leadership when they work collaboratively with their team as opposed to being above them. authentic leaders create a balance in information sharing, demonstrate authentic behavior, are self-aware and develop relational transparency. These leadership qualities allow leaders to motivate those they lead to attain positive performance in the workplace.
