LET THEM DROWN BY NAOMI KLEIN
There are innumerable teachings that can be construed from the video “Let Them Drown-The violence of Othering in a Warming World.” Therefore Naomi’s lecture which is mainly presented through the video is primarily engrossed on the climate change and more so numerous cases of discernment which is foreseen within the global whereby in her subject which sees the elite or the rich and whites prioritizing or ranking their privileges over the individuals who are well-thought-out to be less earnest. Naomi not only lectured the matter of the climate change in her video, but she also taught how othering-capitalism intertwined with recognized discernment as an inherent fragment originating the incidence of the delinquent of the climate change. In this case, othering is undeniably regarded as the act of the rich and advantaged people beholding for the other people with less earnest, communities besides countries intentionally to pay the price of the climate change wittingly to aid in conserving their affluence. In accordance with this video, othering is mainly practiced intentionally to ensure that individuals, communities, and countries which are less earnest to be sacrificed hence losing islands, destroying cities plus rubbing out the rich nations to ensure that the rich nations are not involved in watering down their industrial production growth to meet various targets which had been set such as carbon reduction and maximum two-degree increase in world temperature.
Consequently, from the lecture of Naomi’s video, the reliance that othering works on the incorrect premise that climate change can be contained. This belief has therefore imperiled the rich nations to fail to tear carbon secretions and taking various transmission efforts to alter the energy sources deliberately to aid in minimizing or reducing the ever-increasing temperature which is initiated by the economic growth. Besides, from Naomi’s video lecture, I learn that her aim in presenting it was mainly creating awareness to the people purposely to aid in minimizing practicing some acts, which may result in climate change. This is evidenced through her act of providing or making various questions, which included; what if we destroy our environments to dig out every fossil fuel possible? What if we lose a few islands to the rising sea temperatures? These questions were mainly presented by Naomi in her lecture purposely to validate the atrocious sacrifices that the rich and the privileged do not sweat about merely because they do not value the lives of the other people; they are sacrificing expressly to ensure that their wealth remains safe.
Also, from this video, it is manifested that there is an upsurge in the climate refugees whereby people have begun to drift in their billions either being a victim from of flooding or erosions of their land. In the lecture, Naomi claims that to discourse the climate change, the consumerist constructions need to be challenged since entrepreneurship aids in conserving and enabling the grading of the comparative value of human life. Naomi, in her video impulses that capitalism exists continuously to ease the establishment of wealth to continually drive industrial production and growth and thither the primary key to industrial development is mainly the continued mining no the fossil fuels, whereby the extraction of the fuels demands sacrifice and othering since the poor people have to sacrifice their health and even their lives in going deep into the mines.
Naomi Klein mentions that fighting climate change needs us to fix ourselves and not the world. Setting ourselves entails perplexing capitalist structures hence diminish issues of racialism and exclusiveness. She adds that capitalism is based on exponential growth, which is impossible if we want to continue living.
