Literature is a writing art with an intellectual and artistic value that deploys different forms of languages. There are various classification of research whether its poetic, prose, fictional or nonfictional. Literature is further classified according to other styles for example in short stories, drama, and novels whose works are divided according to their adherence to specific esthetic characteristics, genre and their historical periods (Vernon pg 206). Poetry is a genre of oral literature that is based on interplays of rhythm and words. Words in poetry are stung altogether developing images sounds and ideas that are either abstract or too complex when are directly or indirectly described to the audience.

Authors use connotations and denotations to complicate or develop the meaning of the poem. The design the image, memories, and feelings that surround the words. In poetry, words carry the emotional and cultural implications and associations that’s adds up the poetic sense and denotations (Preminger pg 804). Different authors and poets use various literal features and characteristics such as mood, denotation, and connotation in their verbatim work as described below.Denotation represents the real meaning of a word in poetry. Sometimes denotation is contrasted to the literal meaning of connotation, which comprises of various associated definitions and senses. Denotation is perceived due to the use of visible, authentic concepts, but connotation may evoke sensible meanings and attitudes towards a specific phenomenon applied in the literature. , connotation represents the sense from the conveyed word beyond its real definition. For example, the description of the word childlike suggests, resembles, and is appropriate to childhood or a child (Preminger pg 804). In the same word, connotation means everything from its innocence, naïve, and its maturity.

Connotation does not represent the precise meaning and definition of literature word. The word should be understood like euphemism or slang, although it should show the distinction. When the literal words are used in slang, the word should be completely different from its real definition (Vernon pg 206). On the other hand, in connotation, the used word should show a slight difference in its meaning; therefore, coloring the official description of the word.The poem titled Annabel lee by Edgar Alan Poe use connotation and denotation styles of language. The word chosen in the poem expresses Edgar’s right intended ideas.

The use of connotation and denotation  in the poem shows the feelings and the real meaning of the poem, and the reader must explicitly analyze the poem to get the real meaning of the poem. Edgar seems to tell us a specific story  a poetic form. Therefore the reader has to interpret the words in Edgar’s poem to get the real meaning of the poem. Edgar uses the word ‘Kinsman,’ which seems unfamiliar to the reader. The author  also uses the word ‘angels’ as a representation of Annabel Lee real perfection. In the poem, it shows that angels were not happy about Edgar, but meanwhile, we realize that the author was a human being (Vernon pg 206). The author must have been perfect for making the goddesses jealous of her.

In the poem, the phrase that says, in a kingdom by the sea shows a kind of denotation. It shows the place where the writer and the Annabel lee lived. The word sea in the poem shows the real image of pleasant, peaceful, and a quiet place. The entire phrase also indicates the perfection of their love (Vernon pg 206).  In the poem, the phrase ‘for the moon never beams without bringing me dreams shoes a connotation. It means that the circumstances and the planets supported their yearning perfection and love. The phrases give a representation in that the world would end if the author stops loving and thinking about Annabel. In the last stanza, the fifth line, the phrase brings a theme of love since it shows that the writer was missing his lady where he even slept at the side of the grave (Vernon pg 206). Poe assumes that  Annabel lived to think and love the poet. The connotative phrases revealed Annabel strength and that of the writer. Poe used to compare and give various patterns to show his expressions and thought.

The connotation words in the poem do not force the reader to get the actual meaning of the words in the dictionary, but they can interpret the purpose of the context in verse. Since there are different meanings of words in the dictionary, the reader needs to understand the context of the poem to understand the real meaning of the words and phrases used in the poem. For example, Annabel lee uses the word bore, which has more than nine implications (Preminger pg 804).  In the context of Annabel’s verse, bore means to act or talk in such a way that the other part becomes tired or loses interest in a particular issue. Today, the literal terms have positive and negative connotations and denotations whose meanings vary depending on the circles and contexts in which they are used.The authors should, therefore, consider the beauty of the literature materials to match what the reader wants by the use of connotation and denotations in poetry.
