Introduction

Writers make their concluding passages so powerful by relating to their audience through a personal anecdote. As such, writers exemplify what they have discussed through an informative approach that captures the audience’s attention. The conclusion developed by Barnes takes an absolute approach on postmodernity to unearth personal interpretations of diverse social relations. Hence, he successfully develops perspectives that help individuals accept their own versions without fear of intimidation. I feel that the novelist tweaked the ending in a more sensible approach by not like providing a son for either Tony or Veronica to ensure the former fits into the desirable ending.

Examining the conclusion

Content analysis and evaluation

The conclusion develops clear philosophical ideas relating to literary theory in an emotionally satisfying manner. It is vivid that philosophical ideas develop genuine suspense into the story developed by the detective. As such, the concluding passage is seen to show how Tony Webster rewrites his own story despite having occurred 40 years ago (Barnes, 2012). In addition, the idea is exemplified through Adrian’s philosophical decision when he chooses death over life. Juxtaposition technique to show that Adrian was only 22 years when he committed suicide to the least expected by the other characters in the novel. However, the conclusion shows how Tony romanticized Adrian’s death by rationalizing philosophy ideas to develop desperate impulses. So, the author leaves us with numerous stipulations on whether to blame Veronica for Adrian’s death, or she is just an unlucky victim of circumstances. Thus, the supposition provides room for a paradoxical situation, which can lead to a leader making a seemingly absurd inference. The novel develops themes such as manipulation and self-deception. Tony is in a state which requires him to unconsciously manipulate his memory relative to his past human experiences. Besides, the novel provides a memory theme as a corrupting force to self-deception. As such, it is evident that Tony denies his own past memories due to their consequences on his present life. Thus, the author quotes that “History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation.”.

The novel’s analysis shows that Adrian would have committed suicide. Adrian believed he was the father of Adrian junior, but it’s clear that his real parents are Sarah and Tony. Towards the end, Tony never really achieves clarity of events since his memory greatly shifts through morph into an unprecedented defensiveness haze (Barnes, 2012). Later on, Tony is subjected to guilt and vulnerability to a number of events characterized by decades of severe unrest in his life.  Symbolism technique is utilized in the narrative presentation to show Barnes’s beauty in literature since he develops sharp futility in attempts to rectify the past as exemplified throughout Tony’s life. The author makes the audience feel that Tony never recognizes the intended message despite his role in the tragedy involving the loss of his best friend. However, a link is created between the present and 40 years ago to make Tony realize the impact of the loss as he mourns, providing a sense of the past as characterized by continuous personal unrest.

The author offers room for numerous interpretations concerning Adrian’s junior parentage, which prevents the reader from making a conclusive argument. Evidence from the novel does not provide inventing events which can be deemed obvious from a general perspective (Barnes, 2012). As such, there is the possibility of every reader having a divergent personal view of what transpired throughout the story. Hence, the author seems to have inefficiently carried out his role in providing deep insight into what to be considered as the best course of action. So, the connotation technique is utilized to develop a feeling which invokes the literal meaning of Tony’s actions. The fact that Mr. Barnes has an agile job underscore initiative undertaken to rectify youthful follies by converting them into anecdotes of a narrative. Hence, a link is created outlining the disparities between the seniors and youthful members of the society. The author stipulates that youthful should compel individuals into inventing our future.

Personal response

The concluding passage creates a lot of vagueness, which is pretty annoying based on the fact that memories ought to develop accounts of what transpired without confusion. Hence, it is evident that the novel has left loose ends tied up to provide answers to some of the dire questions. For instance, it would be better is the concluding passage provided reasons why Veronica was very angry at Tony. Also, the conclusion should have provided the relevance of having to mention St Michaels as outlined by the V’s fathers since it never existed (Barnes, 2012). So, the conclusion is really unrealistic since it is hard to believe some of the plot events because Tony shifts many huge historical events from a personal point of view. However, we need to understand that Tony narrates the history of about 40 years ago despite not being a reliable narrator.

Conclusion

The conclusion utilizes critical philosophical ideas which exemplify on events that occurred in history through Tony as the narrator. However, the book provides numerous questions on the authenticity of some of the events that transpired throughout the plot. As such, philosophical depictions tend to lose meaning due to the vagueness of events that transpired in the novel. So, the critical appreciation developed in the novel takes a dig into the authenticity of events as narrated by Tony. Hence, the concluding passage creates room for having divergent views and meanings. Therefore, my personal response argues that the plot incompetently addresses some of the critical issues with little knowledgeable backgrounds.
