long term and short term effects of most of the drugs on the brain

Introduction

To start with, one of the major concepts that I chose is the bystander helping. Classically, this refers to the onlookers of violence, and it also entails the role that they can play in curbing the issue of violence. Another concept is the implicit personality theory and implicit attitude. This refers to specific biases and patterns that an individual uses when they form an impression which is founded on a limited amount of information of an unfamiliar person. Also, another major concept is the issue of drugs and the brain. Typically, this refers to the keen study of the effects that most of the drugs have on the brain. This will include both the long term and short term effects of most of the drugs on the brain. Lastly, I will also be using the concept of observational learning. Observational learning refers to the learning that occurs as a result of observing the behavior of other people. It is a class of social learning that uses various processes to take different forms. Several reasons pushed me to use these concepts. A major and common reason as to why I chose the four concepts is because they are some of the major issues that affect people in our society today and they demand urgency for a safer and better community.

Bystander helping

To begin with, bystanders refer to the non-participants or the observers of an event that is not appealing to the subject, and in most cases, it happens to be violence in schools. It is important to understand that bystanders play a vital role in the cases of violence in institutions. Classically, bystander help can be one of the major ways through which violence can be curbed not only in schools but also in society as a whole. In most of the violence cases, there is only a bully and the victim of bullying. It is clear that there are more bystanders in the event of bullying, and it is quite controversial how the rate of violence increases with the increase in bystander numbers. However, if the bystanders stand up and help in the cases of violence, then positive results can be achieved.

With regard to personal life experience, bystander helping was evident in a situation where one of my schoolmates happened to be a victim of bullying. In the beginning, he was not beat up thoroughly, but the more the observers of the event increased, the more the beating was thorough. In the long run, one of the students stood up and confronted the student bully. After being supported by several other students who were watching, my classmate, who was a victim of the bullying, was helped out.

Implicit Personality Theory and Implicit Attitude

Classically, implicit personality theory, and implicit attitude refers to a person’s notion to tend to think that particular personality characteristics tend to co-occur in specific people. For instance, a person may tend to think that a person with most of the leadership qualities is likely to be friendly. In a nutshell, this theory suggests that if a person has a particular trait, then they are highly likely to possess several other traits. The basis of this concept is that several traits are interrelated and that in the case that an individual possesses one trait, then it is possible that they possess the other traits that are linked to the trait that they already possess. It is vital to understand that implicit personality theory has many implications for social justice. For instance, in a workplace setting, employers tend to think that in the case that an employee has one trait, and then they make an assumption that they have the rest of the traits because they are linked in some way. It is also worth noting that there are controversies with the implicit personality theories in that people argue whether the theories really reflect the reality or they distort it instead.

In relation to the example of violence and bullying in the learning institutions, it is evident that most of the people relate bullying traits with several other negative traits. For instance, in the bullying case of my classmate, most of the instructors assumed that the student bully is likely to be the one responsible for some of the properties that students had lost recently in the institution. Additionally, it was evident that the bully student was dishonest and had to be scrutinized for the letter.

Observational Learning

This is a method of learning that entails learning through observation and modeling the behaviors of other people. Despite the fact that other people believe that learners may end up copying the behaviors of the people they are looking up to, American psychologist Albert Bandura believes that it is possible for them to learn from the behaviors rather than imitating them. It is also worth noting that observational learning is one of the major components in the social learning theory. There are four major components that are crucial in the case of observational learning, and they include attention, retention, observation, and motivation. This serves as one of the major ways of learning during childhood, as children tend to learn from their authoritative figures.

This is evident in my life since I spent most of my childhood moments with all of my parents. It is evident that observational learning has played a vital role in my socializing skills through some of the traits that I learned from my parents. It is also evident from the way that I interact with my peers since I find them is important to me; thus, I treat them with the utmost respect that they deserve.

Drugs and the Brain

In this concept, it is vital to understand that in some way or the other, all drugs tend to affect the brain. Classically, this concept traces back to the effect of the dopamine hormone and the reward cycle in the human body. This is in the sense that our brains are wired to increase the odds that will make us repeat pleasurable activities. The neurotransmitter dopamine is released in large quantities when a healthy pleasurable event occurs that needs to be remembered. On the other hand, drugs can also cause the release of dopamine, creating a connection between the consumption of drugs and pleasure. The more one consumes the drugs, their brains will tend to seek drugs at the expense of other healthier activities to find pleasure in order to reward it. As a result, this will lead to tolerance of the drug that is likely to cause much harm to the drug addict.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, it has been demonstrated that bystanders can have a vital role to play in curbing violence through stepping in and helping the victims. Also, it has been clearly demonstrated that implicit personality theory and implicit attitude predict the traits of people by observing the traits that they already possess and linking them with other similar traits. It has also been demonstrated that observational learning has an important role to play in shaping the behavior of children since they tend to learn more from the people that surround them. Lastly, drugs have a negative impact on the brain since they replace healthier pleasurable moments that activate the neurotransmitter dopamine that has an important role to play in the brain’s reward cycle.
