MANAGING CHANGE IS CHANGE THAT IS IMPOSED ON YOU AS A LEADER

INTRO: Introduction On the other side of managing change is change that is imposed on you as a leader. Your best-laid plan was derailed by an outside market force. A law was changed. A platform shifted. Something broke. What you thought you knew then, isn’t what it actually is today. Something about your style isn’t working in the current environment and you are being asked to make changes. A key employee has resigned for another opportunity and now you are missing a critical skill. You come down with the flu the day before a big sales presentation to investors and know you won’t be able to do the presentation. Someone changes their mind about an important strategic decision. Yes, the only thing constant in life is…change, itself. Change is ever-present and happening all around us at micro levels by the millisecond, and at macro-levels by the day, week, month, and year. Yet, so often people struggle with the idea of change. We are creatures of habit. Do you follow the same route to work every day? Do you drink the same morning beverage of choice? Do you have the same order of getting ready in the morning or winding down at night? How likely are you to try a new routine? How adventurous are you to embrace new activities? How likely are you to try something new that is unfamiliar to you?[unique_solution] Do you learn something new every day? Are you flexible to allow yourself to be open to unexplored possibilities? The role of leader as an entrepreneur is deeply integrated with an ability to be agile and resilient. Entrepreneurs are naturally changemakers and create “tipping points” of cultural behavior changes. In so doing, they have developed a “change” muscle and have grown their skills as situational and adaptive leaders. They are nimble, versatile, and comfortable with shifts. We will explore what those constructs mean and how to build your own “change” muscle to create the energy you will need as an entrepreneurial leader in today’s dynamic world. Change is indeed constant and its pace is accelerating.
