Maturity Has Nothing to Do With Age

Maturity is the ability to apply wisdom when making decisions, cannot express gratitude, be humble, be committed to finishing tasks in time, and show empathy. The type of upbringing people get determines how mature they will be. Raising a child in the right way prepares them for the responsibilities of adulthood. It is possible to meet adults who have not grown old and did not mature up. While some individuals can mature early, others may take a long time. The existence of adults who do not show any qualities of maturity affirms that maturity has nothing to do with the age of a person.

Currently, there are people of varying ages being involved in different types of irresponsible behaviors.  Although various television programs and the internet is providing people with a lot of information, it is easy to find some individuals acting irresponsibly. Some young people, as well as adults, are being associated with substance abuse, they find it difficult to complete tasks, and cannot keep long term commitments. There are some people who are not able to interact well with others and are easily shaken at any sign of criticism. Some older people have limited emotional capacity to handle certain types of information compared to younger individuals.

When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Hitler threatened to radically revise the status of young people by politicizing all aspects of German life. Teachers could content with military youth leaders, which made life uncomfortable for their former masters. Hitler encouraged assault and theft among the youth. The youth brought with them attitudes and habits that could not be easily reconciled with the aspects of youthful obedience. The Nazis told their youth workers not to be addressed grownups, and this made them not to consider themselves as adults. The directive made the youth have less direct control over their lives and could not take responsibilities.

Athletes are required to be responsible people by respecting other athletes, fans, and other people in the community. Athletes should be on the frontline when it comes to avoiding racism and any other forms of prejudice. Although John Rocker was a professional baseball player, he had blatant racism and xenophobia. Other than being busted for steroid use, he had a lot of hatred for the foreigners in New York. He did now want to be around them because he considered them as law offenders, ever sick, and always giving birth to several kids. This is an indication that Rocker was not a responsible athlete like other younger athletes who were more disciplined.

Being around mature people makes an individual feel comfortable and happy. According to Ian McEwan in the book Sex, Death, and History, some people fail to act in a responsible manner as is expected of them. Briony is unable to grasp some situations which are beyond her understanding, and this makes her interpret what she sees. It is when she changes her mindset that she is able to acknowledge the true love between Robbie and Cecilia. I have had some friends who cannot appreciate the good things you do to them. There was a day my friend criticized me for not attending his birthday party, and he was not even interested in knowing the reason why I was not able to be there. If my friend was a mature person, he would be interested in knowing the circumstances that made me not to attend the party.

The actions of people determine their level of maturity. One should not be surprised to find a younger person being more responsible and emotionally strong than an older person. The upbringing of an individual plays a significant role in determining whether they will become responsible adults. People with poor upbringing may take longer or fail to show signs of maturity at any point. This means that maturity has nothing to do with the age of an individual.
