The global shortage of pilots has seen airlines struggle in business. It is not that they are pressing demand for pilots but the ones already employed are cringing for a pay rise. The story, according to Robert Hackel of CNBC News, evinces that money affects how employee motivation. This fact brings to light the motivational effect money has on workplace behaviour. Airlines such as Qantas of Australia and Emirates are pouring resources to hire more pilots. Across Europe, pilots have formed unions, while USA pilots who bore with their airlines during bankruptcy received salary raises. The strikes and Unions created by pilots across Europe show their negative attitude at their workplaces due to low salaries paid (Hackel, 2018). The pay raises to the American employees is to motivate them to work hard and effectively. These cases show the effect money has on workplace behaviour can be made relevant.

 

 

Relevance

Money as a motivator in employees’ workplace behaviour should be relevant. Pay rise should only be to employees who achieve feats worth recognition. Significance can, however, is relative. For instance, an organization run by owners is likely to use money as a motivator according to changes in stakeholder values unlike the case of managers who focus on getting their performance, often short-term, done (Bhebhe, 2018). The raised salaries for employees who remained in the U.S. airlines were relevant in motivating them as well as for showing loyalty.

Even CEOs are motivated to work harder by salary increments. However, in their case, use of money is relevant and serves to make them propel the organization a notch higher. Canadian pilots are taking Jobs with airlines such as Emirates that pays better. For instance, money was relevant for a CEO such as David Calhoun make a transit from G.E. to a German private firm (Jeffery, 2020). Willie Walsh, a former pilot now a CEO, does not believe there are shortages of pilots but rather the relevant application of money as a motivator.

 

Importance

The high pay has made the pilots joining Qantas and Emirates less motivated at their first airlines while developing a negative attitude towards it. Non-significance

Money is not significant as a motivator in workplace behaviour without translating to corporate benefits. Sources of motivation should be emotional, and finances can trigger emotions. However, tragedy strikes when the primary goal becomes to earn more to remain motivated. Money is significant at attracting and retaining employees but can be a costly venture to keep them motivated (Bhebhe, 2018). The employees who remained at the U.S. airlines despite bankruptcy were perhaps sourced from other airlines but were lesser motivated by money for it.
