The theme of the Playlist

The theme of the environment is one of the essential ideas that every Playlist should focus on. I chose the subject of the environment because I believe the environmental issue is becoming a global concern, and the public should be enlightened on the conservation of the situation. Songs are essential ways of passing on messages, and for that reason, the word of environmental preservation will reach as many people as possible. One of the identifying characteristics of music, such as pop, is personal identification. Pop music is ideological music that is aimed to appeal to the masses on a specific idea (Rojek, 2011). Therefore the music will touch on some of the critical issues about our environment and the progress humanity has made in making it sustainable such as recycling wastes and the prevention of environmental pollutions.

Human beings have had a long relationship with the environment because they have been the residents of the situation and have molded it to suit their needs. It is the environment that makes human beings survive, for instance, through the provision of food. It also models the social, spiritual, and moral development of human beings. The evolution of human beings on earth and with rising industrialization, the environment has been transformed both in a positive way such as modern ways of transformation of sewage to fertilizers and negative techniques such as emission of toxic gases from the factories. This is, therefore, an exciting theme that covers up the health aspects of human beings on earth.

The environment represents a human being’s biodiversity and includes living things, air, soil water, and other non-living things such as minerals. The theme of the song should concentrate on pressing the environmental concerns and invite people all over the earth to look after their surroundings. Understanding the different types of pollution and their adverse effects on the health of living organisms should be stressed upon in the whole song. One of the other reasons why I opted to choose the theme of the environment is its relevance to the issues human beings are facing today, such as drought and the broad audience that will be ready to listen to the message. The general audience means that the song has an impact on the society and that it can be used by the community to teach the coming generations the benefits of environmental preservations.

One of the ideas I would explore in the Playlist is the types of pollutions that affect the environment. This is a critical aspect of environmental issues that should be included in the song. Some of the pollutions I would critically explore are air, water, and soil pollutions because they are fundamental elements of contaminations. The last sub-theme that is also important to check on in the song is the various methods of preserving the environment. This is a crucial part because it will tell society precisely what they should do to counter the pollutions. Some of the means of safeguarding the environment include the treatment of sewage before dispelling its water sources, recycling garbage to make fertilizers, and preventing factories from emitting poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide.

Theme of resistance

Roger Bannister was one of the greatest athletes who broke the record by covering a mile in four minutes on May 6, 1954. Roger was a neurologist who understood the link between body and mind. He knew that the resistance to achieve greatness was in the shape of human beings and was transferred to the brain (Bennett et al., 2010). People resisted the possibility of running one mile in four minutes. After finishing the race, the success was repeated by others, therefore proving that what people view as impossibility was just resistance to the body. Hebdige also focuses on the subculture of the youths in Britain in post-war to be a symbol of resistance. He points out that the styles of Britain’s youth challenge the typical ideology through forms of resistance where he points on the introduction of other subcultures, for instance, rockers and Teddy boys. The two individuals try to prove to people the resistance that society is undergoing in one form or the other.

Form of identity

Both the individuals Roger Bannister and Dick Hebdige all live in a society where their status is an important aspect. Bannister lives explicitly in a community where the people believe in impossibilities and identifies themselves with everyday things that they think are easy to achieve. Hebdige, on the other hand, lives in a society where there is a change in the culture, and people have started identifying themselves with the new subcultures such as clothing. The readings of Hebdige are more useful because they present more ideas and reasons why people were changing their culture in the period of Britain’s postwar. He points out that there is a common idea that covers the black reggae and says that it rejects the British national symbol. The Paul Gilroy States that it is because of self-identity that the black communities distinguish themselves and express their identity through their music and cultural ownerships that flow from the music (Gilroy, 2007).
