Music Video Project
The two songs, I luh you Papi by Jennifer Lopez and Girl in a country song by Maddie and Tae will be used to explain concepts and vocabularies of different genre of songs through sociological imagination and concepts. They both talk about how the female gender is objectified and sexualized for the musicians’ own pleasure and popularity, they show how women are treated like candy to be consumed. The videos of both of the songs try to change the common and usual culture applied in the todays’ world by doing it the opposite and placing the male gender in place of the female gender by objectifying and sexualizing them.
The lyrics of the song ‘Girl in a country song’ talks about how the women are uncomfortable in their clothes and how they get disrespected by the men who gawk at them and call them sexy names. This makes them wonder if women are always supposed to look good for the men to pleasure them. The video however does not really reject sexism since the women are still in exposing clothes same as the men who appear funny and ridiculous because they are dressed in the same clothes the women are dressed in. It is rather a way of presenting feminity in a modest way. It seems that the ‘sexy women’ preserved in the entire video are preserved to satisfy straight men’ while the ‘ridiculous men’ brings in a funny idea of a male gay or female.
Jennifer Lopez’s video song tries to sexualize men by dressing them in exposing clothes and washing her car in a sexual way and she is wealthy. The contradiction comes in when her and the other girls dress in exposing clothes too and when comes French Montana shows up at the end of the video dressed up in jeans and a sweatshirt and the girl dancers writhe before him in exposing clothes a clear proof that men artists are never expected to drop their pants the female artists do. The video also shows wealth and power because of Jennifer Lopez’s yacht and her car and how the men models wash it while she’s taking creep shots of the men and in general how she treats them shows that she has the power to do anything to them.
These video songs while trying to reverse the common perception on women sexism ends up showing how it’s so impossible for complete reversal of this perception. This shows that none of this music videos can manage to flip the script completely and this makes it obvious that sexual harassment and abuse will always be common on females.
Jennifer Lopez being a 42-year-old mother of twins shows that this does not necessarily apply on young people. The dressing and the manner in which they dance differ with the stereotypes that assume old people and parents do not dress in exposing clothes or dance in sexual dance styles.
‘Girl in a country song’ video and lyrics are based on just sex, it is evident that there is no love according to how characters relate while the video lyrics of ‘I luh you papi’ are based on both sex and love and the characters relate in a sexually way when they admire pictures of the naked men and when she pours a drink down one of their swimsuits.
