My attitude of never leaving an opportunity to gain knowledge
More than four decades ago, computers came into existence, and today computers are quite capable of performing human tasks. That is the pace at which human expertise is ameliorating. I, Jayashree Santhoshi, would like to contribute to this age of evolution. Let me walk you through some of the things I did till now, which gives me confidence that I can excel with your program. I have always performed well in academics and was in the top 10 percentile of the class. My passion for Mathematics and solving problems sparked an interest in programming languages. When I wrote the program of a simple calculator, I was so happy to understand the working of a device that I use. I wanted to learn more about the working of the machines around me. Studying Electronics and Computer Engineering at Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology offered me equal exposure to both electrical components used in a computer and the software used by computers.
My attitude of never leaving an opportunity to gain knowledge or apply the acquired knowledge propelled me do projects and internships. My first project – ‘Gesture Controlled Robot’ was a robot, controlled using hand gestures. I implemented the code testing different conditions resulting in a firm understanding of the basics of programming such as function calls, nested conditions, loops, and switch statements. My next project – ‘Image authentication using Stochastic Diffusion’ was web-based, and I worked on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, JDBC and SQL. In this, I gained good knowledge with OOPs concepts, classes, inheritance, interfaces, multi-threading, exception handling and collection framework.
After Bachelors, I received a placement offer from IBM. During my training, I worked on product Quizify, in which I designed the ontology of the product, worked on recommendations using graph DB neo4j and implemented auto-generation of questions using SPARQL. Out of a batch of 30 people, I was one of the eight who cleared the be IBM certified Java Full Stack Developer assessment. This shows I have the potential and genuine interest to learn advanced technologies and different programming languages. Being proficient in Data Structure and Algorithms was an advantage to excel in this course. My interest in data mining kindled when I worked on text mining through RDF query language. Later, I started working with the Data Science and Machine learning team of a start-up, using data to predict the sales on a day at a restaurant. Though my exposure is preliminary, I developed a desire to deep dive in this area.
A Masters in Computer Science at North Carolina State University, Raleigh with Data Science track will help me enhance my knowledge in this area. And, learning subjects Automated Learning and Data Analysis, Graph Data Mining and Educational Data Mining, I believe I can contribute to bridging the gap between haves and have-nots of today. Further, I hope to work with Michael Rappa and Christopher Healey in the area of Information and knowledge management. I am sure that with absolute commitment and a mindset to excel, I can live up to the university’s standards and make noteworthy contributions to the Institute of Advanced Analytics centre.
I thank you for this opportunity to express myself and would request you to give my application a thoughtful consideration.
