My First Day at College
After completing my Matriculation examination, we went home for holidays waiting examination results to be released later in the year. After a restraining high school life with strict restriction and discipline, I was eagerly waiting to earn permanent freedom and happiness in college. I was waiting to enjoy the college life that my elder brother would tell me every time we break for the summer holidays. “Life at college is picnics and making friends full of freedom and happiness” these are the words that my brother could remind me every time, and I couldn’t wait to enjoy the same life. So I was nervous as I waited for results.
When results were released, I was delighted as I passed with flying colours. With my grade, I was qualified to join State College that I have always dreamed of. I submitted my forms, and within one, admission forms were out. I went to the administration block to clear fees as I received my student card. Surprisingly, student leaders helped us greatly as they directed us where to go for certain assistance. After completing, I couldn’t believe that I was a collegiate. The reporting date was on the 7th of the same month.
The day for reporting to the college was here and. I waked up early and took a cold bath. Meanwhile, my mum had prepared breakfast, and I hurriedly took it. Before I left, I made a short prayer asking God’s guidance throughout my college life. I had my bus fare with me. I bided my mum goodbye and left.
On arriving, I was very nervous. I found many other fresh students confused. As I headed to the main building, I heard somebody call my name from behind. I assumed as I knew nobody in the school. The voice called again this time coming near me. I look, and I was delighted to see it was Jimmy. We schooled in the same high school with Jimmy, but he was a class ahead of me. After he left, I did not know he was admitted to the same college. We greeted each other happily. He inquired where I was heading. I told him I wanted to scan through my timetable as my classes would begin the next day.
He accompanied me to the notice board so I could see my classes. The timetable was complex, as it included classes for the whole school. He helped me to prepare my timetable. To be honest, I could not have managed if it wasn’t for him. When we were through with the timetable, he gave me a comprehensive orientation of the school. He took me to the library, computer laboratory, School mess, and entertainment hall.
The next destination was to the lecture halls. But because it was almost lunchtime, we decided to have our lunch. We went to the school mess for our lunch. I was happy to see a sandwich on the menu as it is my favorite. I took a sandwich and fruit juice. Jimmy opted for a fruit salad, citing that he wasn’t that hungry. Once we were through with our lunch, we went to lecture halls. In the lecture halls, we found some of the senior students doing personal studies. The halls were spacious and neatly painted. Actually, they looked like they were welcoming us to start our classes. We later visited the school swimming pool, where a multitude of students were enjoying swimming. I watched from a distance as Jimmy conversed with his friends. He later introduced me to them. I was given swimming costumes, and we all started swimming.
By evening, I had made a lot of friends and enjoyed myself too. We changed and left the pool. Jimmy promised to see me the next day for more orientation. We bided goodbye and left for our respective homes. As I went home, I was psychologically, physically, and emotionally prepared to begin my classes at a top-notch. Nevertheless, my first day in college will never fade from my memory.
