my personal views about Nightly Business Report

Introduction

Nightly Business Report is a show about business and finance that have been running for decades. My perception of NBR is that it tries to explain to the ordinary people what is going on in the business world, and how such affairs are affecting the economy and people’s lives. This analysis reveals my personal views about NBR.

Favorite TV show

My favorite TV shows are documentaries. Top on the list is Secret Lives of the Super Rich and American Greed. I love these programs since they depict the lives of people who have made it in life and how their lifestyles are. Some have “made it” using dubious means, and when they are exposed, their lifestyle changes overnight.

There are many differences between my two favorite TV programs and NBR. First, my favorite TV shows are about the lives of people, while NBR is about business and markets, both in America and internationally. The focus is on the individual vs. international business. Also, the people interviewed in the two shows are entirely different. In American greed, for instance, you can find the show interviewing PLAYBOY’s Playmates models, who have posed naked for years on covers of magazines. The interviews conducted by NBR are about leaders in different fields in the world, most of whom have a lot of respect and admiration from the world over. For example, NBR has done interviews with top CEO such as Tom Cook, the current CEO of Apple, as done in some discussions, such as the January 2019 edition. In addition to interviewing people NBR brings analysts to comment on what the business leaders who had been interviewed had said, giving the information more strength and meaning. This makes the discussions more detailed and from different perspectives from highly educated individuals.

In terms of investments, the two shows differ significantly. NBR show is about wise investments in properties, bonds, and stocks. The show brings market analysts to explain to the audience how to make decisions on investments, how different companies are doing so that anyone interested in such companies and organizations can know what to expect. The other two programs, the Secret Lives of the Super Rich, and American Greed are about lifestyle, and most investments done by the people interviewed are about show-offs, on mundane things that make them known by other people.

The only common similarity between NBR on one side and Secret Lives of the Super Rich, and American Greed, on the other hand, is that all the three shows teach us about life, though differently. NBR is about wise decision making in the business field and finances, while American greed and Secret lives are about individuals and the decisions they make in their personal lives.

Why I like NBR

One quality of NBR that stands out is its interviews with the business leaders about a current topic. This not only supports their story but gives the audience a different view of the trending topic. NBR gives top CEOs, managers, and founders a chance to comment and give their opinions on issues relating to their organization, companies, or startups. Later, after these leaders are done, NBR gives analysts a chance to discuss on the topic and what the same leaders said. This makes the show livelier and educative.

With the top-notch quality of news that NBR gives its audience, it has its shortcomings. For instance, the interviews that the show has with the top business leaders are usually concise, limiting the information they give. Such discussions need adequate time since most viewers of the show are concerned with the market dynamics, and getting this information is vital to their work.

Lessons from the NBR show

NBR show is about international business and market dynamics that not only affect America but the world at large. Discussing American companies and how the global market affects them not only gives us a view of how such companies operate but also how our government affects the same companies and organizations. A case example is the ongoing trade wars between the USA and China, which has been featured many times in NBR for more than a year. With time, many companies have shrinking revenues, blaming it on the trade wars,  according to their leaders and CEOs interviewed by NBR. Such coverage and interviews show how the government affects companies in America. With some companies shutting down some of their offices and laying down their workers, NBR indirectly shows us how government affects our lives directly. With lousy governance and poor policies, businesses are affected, and this affects ordinary people.

Business terms

Valuation: This is an estimate of what an asset is worth and the determinants of that value. Valuation is based on the fact that the actual value of the asset can’t change for the owner to take advantage of and sell to some fool who will buy it at a higher price (“What is Valuation?” n.d.).

Investor: This is a person or business entity that commits its money to a company/organization or a startup for financial gain (Chen, 2020). Investment money can come from stocks, bonds, derivatives, or even real estate.

Market volatility: Volatility implies a lot of changes in the prices of stock and assets in the market. Market volatility affects investments. If your volatility becomes too high, the investors usually leave (Clenow, 2013).

Portfolio: It is a financial asset such as currencies, bonds, cash, stocks, funds, and stock. In addition to tradable securities, art, and private investments are also included in the portfolio (Chen, 2019). Investors or financial professionals hold portfolios.

Bear market: This is a downward trajectory of the market for a period, where the market is moving down at about 20% for every quarter. If the path is prolonged, it can cause severe economic problems years that can last for years. A good example is the fall of New York Market from 1929-32, known as a crash where the bear market wiped out 90% of capital values (Kauders, 2016). This was so severe that twenty years down the line, the market had not recovered the loss.

Recommendations

I would recommend NBR to any person who is serious in the business/finance field. Many news and topics discussed in the show never form the headline news in both television news and newspapers. This makes NBR one of the best places to get trending news about the business world. Since it is short, around thirty minutes, it gives its viewers news on world business in a short time, with coverage of top leaders and analysts giving their views.  For viewers interested in a topic discussed, he/she can then investigate further through newspapers, business magazines such as The Economist, or internet search. NBR is the first place for any person to get news on business.

Suggestions

NBR can help its viewers a lot if they can bring together the top leaders they usually bring on their interviews along with the analyst that they bring. Making the two entities sit together and discuss and argue on an issue in the business field would make for richer content, and it will be more educative from the discussion from people with different viewpoints on the same subject.
