Background information

The leading cancer killer in females is breast cancer. Cancer by itself is threatening to many and especially if one of their family members survived the disease or died because of it. The disease requires a special diagnosis to ascertain if one has it or is free from it, and such assessment can be regular among women. Most women take it seriously once they are diagnosed with it. There are risk factors associated with cancer, which include age, genetic inheritance, and the number of children one has sired. Being female is another risk factor as it is most prevalent compared to men who are a hundred times safer.

Risk factors

Risk factors to breast cancer are largely divided into which are modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Modifiable risk factors, are habits that people can control, including taking alcohol. Generally, modifiable factors are lifestyles that people embrace. These include tobacco smoking, alcohol intake, and obesity, lack of physical exercise, shift-work, and radiation. Fixed risk factors for breast cancer are those which are unchangeable. For instance, risks such as biological sex, age, and genetics.

Relevance

When teaching student nurses, it is essential to teach them on breast examinations. Breast exams by nurses and any other medical professional are essential in regular physical checkups. If a patient had earlier been diagnosed with breast cancer and perhaps cured, a routine checkup is always done. Others who have complications that might lead doctors to examine breast cancer might be liable for routine breast exams. During a breast exam, there are procedures to be followed, which the nurse should be aware of. For instance, the patient is supposed to undress from the waist up. The student-nurses upon doing breast exams will enable them to understand such processes and apply them during their professional practice.

From the video provided, the patient was asked several questions from each student-nurse. By utilizing good communication skills, they intend to make the patient feel at ease and ready for the exam. They proceed to check the patient’s breast changes in symmetry, shape, and size. They also position the patient to lean upwards on the bed. They use gloves while checking for skin changes, including redness, dimpling, and rashes. They press their fingers on the breast to check for lumps as well as any discharge from the nipples.

In conclusion, the video presentation bears procedural activities involved in breast assessment in actual practice. These include the use of proper introduction among the nurses to the patient and explaining oneself on what you intend to do during the entire process. There are also questions asked by the nurse to the patient and help in obtaining reliable and authentic results.
