The fundamental commitment is to deliver the best nursing care to patients in a safe which creed, religion, ethnicity, language, and, economic status are deeply respected (University of New Mexico Hospital, n.d). Therefore, the classes are essential as they provide an opportunity for the nurses to develop professionally by using professional development programmes (American Nurses Credentialing Center, 2014). Therefore, nursing staff are encouraged to attend all nursing staff development classes to promote professional growth, critical thinking and, their service-delivery capability (UNMH n.d)
Mission
Our mission is to equip the nursing staff with values, knowledge, and skills to enable them to provide the best nursing care to patients (UNMH n.d).
Course Description
Due to the high rate of patients with limited English proficiency admitted in the hospital, a gap analysis was conducted to determine the need to develop a class to increase the basic knowledge of how treatment in the language of the patient will improve the quality of patient care.
Within this course, the nursing staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital will apply their knowledge and skills when taking care of patients with limited English proficiency.
The course will include training the nursing staff on the primary native language. Furthermore, the nursing staff will interact with patients with limited English proficiency to increase exposure and, equip them with necessary communication skills in the native language. Assessment for the course will include oral and written tests.
Course goal
The goal of the course is to utilize evidence-based practice guidelines by using a contextual nursing development class.
Upon the completion of this class, the nursing staff will:
- Demonstrate the relationship between language proficiency and service delivery.
- Apply cultural awareness skills when dealing with patients with limited English proficiency
- Apply communication skills when providing nursing care and health education to patients who are from different cultural backgrounds. The nurses will achieve this by practicing the new skills in a real situation and, assessing the communication pattern between the patient and the nurse.
- Apply evidence-based skills as a way of caring for patients with limited English proficiency.
Staff Assessment
Nurses will self-report increased knowledge and confidence in post-course evaluation. The nurses will also complete a posttest with a passing grade of 80% or higher. Since the content of the course will be based majorly on communication skills, the nurses will be given an oral test to evaluate their communication skills. Furthermore, patients will be interviewed to assess whether or not the nurses apply the skills from the course into their daily practice. Besides, the nurses will be required to sit for a written test to gauge their level of knowledge in the class.
