Many theatre artists today are going “out of the box” to present work that challenges traditional notions of theatre performance.
Performance art describes performances that mix theatre, visual arts, music, dance, gesture, and rituals. Performance artists often use multimedia effects, sounds, and lighting effects to make a point and allow the audience to understand its deeper implications. They often reject the traditional elements of drama: plot, dialogue, characters, and setting. They are not interested in telling a story but in conveying a state of being. Like Dada and Theatre of Cruelty performers of the past, performance artists seek to challenge the audience. They often break social rules in order to force the observers to think about current issues. Instead of a traditional theatre or performance space, performance artists are interested in public arenas, such as galleries, parks, garages—anywhere that fits their needs.” (Chapter 17 of your textbook)
Immersive theatre breaks the fourth wall in a major way, providing “sensual experiences with audiences encouraged not only to hear and see a production, but to touch, taste, and smell it as well. Scenic designs fully consume audience members with each aspect researched and specifically designed and enacted.10,11 Food and drink are often featured as a part of the experience and productions may contain opportunities to physically interact with scenic elements.
