Operating systems and its types- description and comparison

Nowadays, it is common to use computers and smartphones, and these systems require an operating system that links the software and hardware components. The OS manages files, computes apps, distributes memory, and enforce device security. The common types of OS are Android, Linux, UNIX, along with z/OS, ROS, etc. Here, two types of common OS shall be selected, described, and compared.

OS 1- Android OS

Android can be considered as the hugely popular platforms across the world. It can be installed in a range of devices. Google developed Android, and it can be installed in devices developed by different manufacturers. Based on the needs of the smartphone or tablet, the manufacturers tweak the parts of the interface. The users can easily download the customized versions, and Android allows its users to legally modify the versions (Mongia & Madisetti, 2010). Google built the Play Store in Android, and it consists of an application. Initially, it used Java and was supported in devices that require low power. Gradually, Google developed Android, and new releases are given new names. The basic features are UI framework, mobile suited hardware reference, open platform for mobile development, and an application.

OS 2- Linux OS

Linux has been developed by Linus Torvalds, a Finnish programmer. Nowadays, the open-source of Linux is available, and programmers can easily collaborate. The programmers can tweak the available version and submit it in the central kernel software (Attar, 2017). Customized versions for users are available, and it is simple to install the software. It mainly serves the scientific and corporate community. It is widely popular in cloud computing zones. Costs of using Linux are zero, and it can easily run in various kinds of hardware. The common features include stable OS, open-source, easily downloadable and easy installation process.  It prioritizes mainly the networking service and office applications to some extent. Along with that, it offers database support as well as trade services to the German Army and Amazon. It has gained popularity among service providers as a proxy-, firewall and web server.

OS 1 vs. OS 2

In terms of platform availability, there is no difference between Android and Linux as both are open source. However, Android is a framework while Linux is only an OS. Android is frequently updated and Linux less frequently. Both are popular choices among users. Nevertheless, Linux has been developed for office users as well as personal use. Android can be particularly used in tablet and mobile devices. In comparison to Linux, the footprint of Android is larger. Android offers two architectures only, such as x86 and ARM, while Linux offers multiple architectures (Al-Rayes, 2012). This functional difference can be regarded as one of the fundamental differences. Again, a key difference is that Android uses flash memory while Linux uses memory devices and NAND for meeting the storage needs of the device. C library is used by Android, while the GNU C library is used by Linux. Hence, it can be concluded that both are important and serves specific functions. Both hold a legacy and thrives upon it.
