General Motors is one of the largest and well-known companies in the world. This is because of its consistency in leadership in the automotive industry. In 2014, the company lost about 800,000 cars due to an explosion that happen because of the faulty of the stitches. The company has been successful because of its organization model that shows the hierarchy where the flow of power is downward and vertical. On the other hand, General Motors is the first company that has faced a cultural repercussion of a cultural crisis. The following paper will analyze the organization modeling, leadership theory, and organizational culture of the company in the case study.
Organizational model
The model that is used by the General Motor company is the traditional hierarchical model. In the traditional hierarchal model is where the flow of power is downward and vertical. The model is made in a way that it can be recognized easily by the employees of the organization. The model is comprised of line work, supervisors, and central personal management. The other model comprises of the upward towards upper management and then ends on the traditional hierarchical model. The organization uses the structure as the major option; however, it can also use the alternative arrangement. The structure is the major model of the organization, and also, it exists the alternative arrangement. One of the alternatives is the organization matrix model, which is pat if the traditional hierarchical model (Blyton & Morris, 2017). The organization uses the organization matrix model on the cross-functional teams, especially when they want to complete a specific assigned task. The team usually has a team leader who provides a report to the project manager and the functional manager. The leadership in General Motors has another option of using another level of the matrix that can be used in the present period business model called holacratic organization model, which is observed as flat management. Leadership theory
Leadership is one of the essential factors in an organization. In the case study, the leadership style that is used is associated with the Autocratic leadership style. The Autocratic leadership style includes an individual who has control in the entire decision-making process, and the group members provide a little input. The leadership style is used on the managers who have the qualification of leading team members towards destructive work performance and the level of motivation. This kind of method makes leaders blame an individual for mistakes and the neglecting of duties (Castillod, 2016). The management attributes from the case study show confusion because no one in the organizational setup is ready to own up and admit the mistakes and blame made. As a result, there are different reasons for the leadership shift because of internal and external influence. The internal factors that were the reason for the General Motors’ destruction were due to dishonesty, which demanded change from the administration. The external influence came from the public to try to understand and demand a full responsibility to know the definite problem. Generally, the problem in the cultural environment and the leadership style attracts the attention of the media. This means that the internal and external factors have a huge influence on the change of culture, process, and change in the structure.
Organizational Culture
Culture has a huge influence on working and how the employees behave in an organization. According to the internal culture, the public does not believe in the case study of General Motors. The leadership and culture have a critical part of the scandal that happened in General motors. Generally, the internal culture is known to express the assumptions, values, and beliefs. On the other hand, behavior theory is an essential element in the business world today. This is because it studies the behavior of the leaders and the culture of leadership. One of the internal cultures is found in the organizational setup. In the case of General Motors, they are known for their habit of putting blames on others. The Organization is also known to its node case, which represents compliance. Basically, the level of efficiency may increase productivity if an organization if the employees are treated with care and provided the right to contribute to decision making.
Conclusion
The internal and leadership style did not match accordingly. On the other hand, the autocratic type of leadership is known to forward the responsibilities of the organization to the supervisors who are known to work with courage. In the case of General Motors, employees are not given the opportunity of participating or making critical decisions or provide suggestions that would be needed in the matters of the organization. Generally, the leadership style did not have alignment with the traditional hierarchical model of organization. As a result, the CEO has made an effort to bring change to the culture of the organization. The effect of leadership is having a significant impact on the behavior of employees, and the culture has much more influence on the working behavior of the employees.
