Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues

Discussion 1

Years after the Columbine High School shooting, active shooter incidences are still evident in schools. These incidences involve mass shootings where more than two students are killed (Pecanha, 2019). It thus means that mitigations measures that can adequately deal with school shootings are still missing. It is important to note that active shooting may not be done away with altogether. However, the risk of occurrence can be reduced.

Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigation

Internet use, which is common among students, plays a significant role in an active shooting. Children are exposed to violence, such as violent video games. Through the use of the internet, students can also learn about gun use. It is interesting to note that most shootings involve the use of handguns (“Spotlight 3: Active Shooter Incidents in Educational Settings”, 2019).  Gadgets such as smartphones and laptops create vulnerabilities while the use of gun violence is the likely threat. Controlled use of devices while in school could deal with the problem.

Security is paramount in the prevention and mitigation of active shooter scenarios in High School. Security lapses such as lack of law enforcement on school grounds further aggravate the problem. Employment of law enforcement personnel in schools could quell a shooting incidence, unlike a scenario where the school has to wait for intervention from nearby law enforcement.

Discussion 2

Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigation

The majority of active shooters in school are students in the school. The uptake of the use of see-through backpacks as a security measure in schools as opposed to the use of metal detectors is more practical. A shift from backpack to gadget use would hinder the carrying of guns on school grounds. Backpack use, in this case, poses as the vulnerability with concealed weapons is the possible threat. The mitigation measure would be the replacement of backpacks with gadgets.

Teachers are not well trained to deal with emotional and psychological issues. In this regard identifying and adequately coping with unstable students is a challenge. As a result, these unpredictable students carry out violent attacks such as school shootings. Having trained personnel in schools could alleviate the problem. Staff such as trained counselors could deal with unstable students in efforts to helping them deal with their underlying issues.

The lack of law enforcement protection in schools increases the chances of an increased number of victims. Having school protection could reduce victim numbers. Schools carry out drills that are meant to better prepare them in case of active shooter scenarios (Gerstmann, 2019). However, some of the exercises are deemed traumatizing (Williamson, 2019).

Discussion 3

Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigation

Public schools have high numbers of students; hence an active shooter attack can be catastrophic not just physically but emotionally as well. The school setting is meant to create a safe environment for learning and self-development (Wright, 2018). In active shooter incidences, safety is significantly compromised. The presence of weapons in school results in a likelihood of shooting incidences. Conducting random searches as well as the use of learning gadgets such as laptops and tablets instead of backpacks, could mitigate the threat. Lack of organization could result in more casualties. The use of drills is, in this regard, is meant to bolster preparedness in regards to active shooting incidences. Lack of technology and soft perimeter increases the chances of weapon sneaking. Technology, in this case, refers to weapon detection measures while soft perimeter refers to weak fencing, for example, where students can jump over or sneak through. The use of more robust perimeter fencing and the use of weapon detection technology could decrease weapon sneaking into school grounds.
