Organizational Systems & Quality Leadership

Nursing quality indicators work in unison to improve the overall patient outcomes and satisfaction while adhering to the various ethical concerns. The American Nurses Association (ANA) set the standards for the identification of the sensitive indicators in a nursing environment, and care facilities. When a patient reports or is admitted to your facility, as a nurse it is paramount to adhere to the required sensitive indicators to achieve the overall level of satisfaction among the patients.

Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators

The scenario of a 72-year old Mr. J elucidates various loopholes in the nursing practice, and lack of adherence to the required quality indicators. It is important to note that even though Mr. J is tired, he can still answer simple questions correctly. The nurse who was in charge of Mr. J ought to have identified this fact and utilize the opportunity. Instead, Mr. J was only able to communicate to the daughter who came to visit to remove the restrains so that he could attend to himself in a bathroom. The nursing quality-indicators of restraint prevalent could be applied by the certified assistant nurse to remove the restraint even before the daughter intervened (Dubois et al, 2017). In the same process, the daughter noticed a depressed red area on his father’s lower spine but upon reporting to the CNA, the nurse showed little concern about the case mentioning it is nothing to worry about. Patient satisfaction as a nursing quality indicator was significantly compromised. We have to take note that Mr. J decided to use the daughter due to the absence of the CNA. In this case, his level of satisfaction was remarkably lowered. Suppose the CNA was determined to achieve the desired level of patient satisfaction, she should have addressed the concerns of the daughter about the depressed red area rather than just brushing over it.

Advancing Quality Patient Care

Patient’s data regarding the type of meal must be adhered to at all costs. Keeping such data in all the hospital would prevent the incidences of failure to rescue. Such data would guide the nurse in charge to know what type of meal is recommended for which patient. Incidences of failure to rescue can result in mortality or morbidity. In this case study, we see Mr. J consuming 75% of the wrong meal. One empirical question we ask is how the chopped pork cutlet found its way on the tray instead of the recommended meal. Some people are allergic to certain foods and especially pork meat. Mr. J would be exposed to increased morbidity because he knew the right meal was on the tray.

Resolution of Ethical Issues

The ethical issue in this scenario is serving the wrong meal, and in this case, serving pork meal to a Jew, who from the theological perspective, condemn the consumption of cloven-hoofed animals. Moreover, concealing helpful information from reaching the daughter would be so detrimental to the father if he was allergic to pork. The daughter might have information about the allergic history of the father yet she was not told about the incident. To solve this ethical concern, the system resources such as digital databases used in storing other information about the patient’s information should also store information regarding meals. The dietary workers must access such information to avid the mix-ups in the orders, which has been happening in the hospital for the past six months.
